NEWS RELEASE

Warning system for Parking as suggested in the Hyatt-Palma study ready to take effect August 25th. 2003.

On August the 25th. the City of Sault Ste Marie will be implementing anticipated changes to the current parking system. The changes are the product of recommendations made by the Hyatt-Palma downtown revitalization study and many months of planning and evaluation by the city, the parking commission, the downtown development authority and members of the business community.

The additional changes will supplement others reviously implemented such as the (two hour free parking) on Ashmun and Portage Streets downtown and is intended to encourage people to visit the downtown while providing regulations that discourage system abuse.

The system changes will also provide a warning for a first offence instead of a ticket with a fine for exceeding parking meter time limits, violating permit parking regulations, and violating the free parking time limitations.

The system when introduced will track violations attributed to a specific vehicle license number. If this vehicle is violating one of the above regulations it will be issued a warning. The same vehicle if observed in violation of any of the above regulations a second time within a six month period it will be issued a citation for $7.00 under a progressive fine component designed to discourage repeat offenders. The same vehicle if found in violation a third time will receive a citation for $10.00 which is the established fine for most improper parking tickets under city ordinance.

By implementing these changes it is hoped that the proper balance of providing user friendly and functional parking in the downtown will be achieved.

In conclusion, it should be noted that all other city parking regulations and fines remain unchanged.
