Notes for RICHARD MURPHY:

Handwritten Notes by Steven Myers, pgs. 1-2:

RICHARD MURPHY I was born circa 1801 in County Kildare, Ireland. He married MARY O'NEIL, daughter of ______ O'NEIL and WEALTHY HARE. She was born circa 1807 in Ireland. They settled in New York in 1851 with their young family in order to escape the potato famine. Richard could read and write, as could his wife, Mary. Letters were often brought to him to be read by the other immigrant Irish to be read. He built a home on Whitney Road in Fairport, which served as a site for religious services before a church was available. He farmed the 17 acres around his home there and also land he owned on Turkhill Rd. in the Town of Perrinton. This latter was divided into 18 acre parcels for his sons when they came of age. According to the Monroe County Directory of 1869-70 he was a farmer of 105 1/2 acres. The 1870 federal census valued his real estate at $5000. Besides farming Richard and his sons also did work on the Erie Canal which ran close by. Richard left his farm on Whitney Rd. to his son James. Richard and his wife are both buried in the Murphy family plot in St. Mary's Cemetery, known commonly to the old Irish as Murphy's Hill. The cemetery is located on land Richard had given to his son Stephen. Richard died December 9, 1876 age 75 (church records show age 74). His wife Mary died August 11, 1882 age 75 (church records show age 70).

Burial: Unknown, St. Mary's Cemetery (Murphy's Hill), Fairport, Monroe, New York, USA12

Notes for DARWIN MURPHY:

[Handwritten Notes by Steven Myers, pg. 13:]

Darby Murphy was considered to be the black sheep of the family. We know that he attended school in the year 1860 and could read and write. In 1860 and 1870, he was a farm laborer, residing with his parents. He does not appear in the 1880 census of Fairport. Darby remained a batchelor. At one time, he lived off of Whitney Rd. in Fairport, probably with his brother, Stephen. He also lived in a "shanty" on Turkhill Rd., apparently having received land from his father. His piece was located near the old power station site. After his next move, family contact was scarce, although his nephew Joseph used to see him once in a while at the place on Howell Rd. He was last seen on a visit ro the Monihan place in Fairport, Spring 1923 or 1924. At one time Darby lived on Wayneport Rd.  and according to Monihan in June 1974 he lived on Front Street on sid row in Rochester.

[Handwritten Notes by Steven Myers, pg. 24:]

Dick (1974) - Old Bill Hartley went to see Stephen (Darby) in shanty on turkhill, to scare him.  Stephen (Darby) started spittin' up food and shootin' at the woodbox (in the corner). Hartley ran home scared - thought Stephen (Darby) went crazy.

Occupation: Bet. 1860 - 1870, Farm laborer17

Notes for JOHN R. MURPHY:

[Handwritten Notes of Steven Myers, pgs. 3-8:]

He had a bad arm which he called his "lady's arm," but was still noted for his exceptional strength and would readily except the challenge to it. He was short, but had a muscular build. John R. built a home on Turkhill Rd. on land given him by his father. He probably also farmed this land. His daughter Katharine of his first wife Catherine Patton was raised by in-laws in Michigan. In 1904, John R. visited his daughter, Katharine, in Michigan for the first time.

Stories

1. John Donald Murphy relates in Aug 1977 -
Orn Tooley said he'd give John R. a ride home, he stepped right up in the buggy barrel of crackers on his shoulder, lunch bucket in one hand, rode up to front of his place, stepped down, stood there talkin' with Orn, then the tug (harness) on one of the horses was twisted so he set down his lunch pail and fixed it, walked up the drive and right down into the cellar below the house - never took that barrel off his shoulder.
2. Indian family across river on back of lot - smoke curlin' out of woods - teepee back there.
3. Old Charlie Indian walked across canal bottom (?) with rock on his head - moved 1881 (source?) couldn't swim - hold him down
