Rear sight

These pics and videos show how I finished the rear sight.

The rear sight is a little more challenging then anything else on this build.

The size alone makes it tough!

This is what I started with. Found a piece in the scrap bin that was close to the size that I needed plus would give me some extra if I needed it.

The first step I took was to mill my block to the over all height the sight would be in the laid down position.

The short distance tang

Getting ready to cut the profile for the short distance tang.

Here you can see the tang for the sight when its in the lowed position

The next step I machined the step and long distance tang

I don't have a very good pic of this step. Not sure what happend.

Just another bad pic of this step. Sorry!

For some reason these are the only two pics I have of this step but I have a video of it so click here to see it. (About 30sec)

Next I drilled and tapped the wind age adjustment hole

Getting ready to center drill.

Drilled and tapped. 4-40 tap

Here is a 45 sec video of this step for your viewing pleasure!

Next step mill the long distance tang opening

I plunge drilled then cut the opening in one pass.

All done

Next step was to notch the short distance tang and then this portion of the sight

would be complete. No pics or vids of this step sorry!

Here's a close up of the of the completed part.

Another close up

Making elevation slider was next.

Why such a big chunk of metal for such a small part? you ask. I though I might need more then one shot at this part. As it turned out one was all I needed.

Millin her done to the correct thickness

Next step is to cut a slot down the center to make room for the key seat cutter.

1/4" end mill down the center

First pass almost done.

Next step was to cut the slot for the slider to fit over the sight tang.

Using a 1/4 X .0625 Woodruff cuter

The slots are .040" deep. I did .010" a pass. I always go slow and take light cuts. Makes the tools last!!

Next step I cut the dish for the rear sight groove.

Getting ready to make the cut

It's cool how the flash makes the chips look like frost. You can see the completed cut in the background

Sorry no video of this step

Next I cut the slider off on the band saw and trued the edge

Getting ready to make the cut

All done

A 10 sec video of this step

Next step was to drill and tap the 0-80 hole for the bolt that keeps the slider from falling off

Center drilled and ready to drill

Hole drilled nad ready to tap

All done
