Desiring to atone for the disastrous consequences of the evil acts of Krona, the Maltusian's of Oa became the Guardians of the Universe. Choosing to work through proxies, the Guardians created an army of law-enforcement androids called the Manhunters.
Armed with a stun-gun that drew it energy from a hand-held power battery, the precursors to the Green Lanterns were sent to sectors of the Universe beset by evil. For centuries they successfully combated injustice with the oath, "No evil escapes the Manhunters."
For unknown reasons the Manhunters rebelled against their former masters, unwilling to risk their existence for the cause of justice. Invading Oa, the androids were repelled, but would over the millennia continue to oppose the Guardians and their agents the Hallas and later the Green Lantern Corps.
