The 3rd Annual Roy Begley Memorial Bench Press Challenge will be held March 27 at Frenchtown Square mall. Registration begins at 10:30 a.m., followed by the competition at noon.
Special appearances will be made by the "world's strongest man" Anthony Clark, Bronco McKart, and Miss Hawaiian Tropic.
Participants are asked to collect pledges before competing under the "touch and go" rules. Weight divisions for men include 150 to 175 pounds, 175 to 200, 200 to 225, 225 to 250, and 250 and over. Divisions are open for women, teens, men under 150 pounds and the seniors category for those older than 40.
The person who raises the most money wins a 6 month membership to the Powerhouse Gym. First place winners in each division win a one month membership, and plaques go to the top three winners in each class.
A donation of $25 earns a sports bottle, $50 adds a t-shirt, and $100 gets a gym bag, plus the other two prizes. Gold sponsors, those who raise $1,000 or more, will be specially thanked during the intermission.
Roy A. Begley, the son of the Rev. Austin and Ella Lockhart Begley of Monroe, died of complications from muscular dystrophy in 1995. A graduate of Monroe High School and an avid weightlifter, he was a lance corporal in the Marines before being medically discharged with honors.
Sponsored by the mall, Powerhouse Gyms, Monroe Trophy, Rainstorm Productions, La-Z-Boy Incorporated, the Southeastern Michigan Timberwolves and the Michigan State Police, all proceeds will benefit the Muscular Dystrophy Association.
