Halloween Massacre
One dark, cold, stormy night I walked down the street. Children ran across my path, happily scaring each other in their costumes. A small witch flew by me on her broom, strutting her feet on the ground. I smiled to myself, thinking about how when I was little I’d dress up in silly costumes, going door to door collecting candy. Now that I’m older I have better things to do. Charles was having a huge party tonight and we were going to party hard. All the teens in town were invited to one of his old house out in the woods. Flyers were all around school.
Chris broke into my thoughts for a moment; all my hopes were set on him being there. Maybe we’d end up hooking up; at least that’s what I was wishing for. He was so adorable. His short brown hair bounced with every step he took. His hazel eyes shimmered as he smiled his toothy smile. I grinned to myself as his image popped in to my head once again. If only I weren’t so shy and could talk to him.
“Are we almost there?” Sammie asked me.
“We are supposed to meet them at the next block up,” I replied.
We fell silent once again. I looked around me at all of the children. I stepped over a smashed pumpkin that lye in the road. Many houses were covered in toilet paper from the night before.
“Hey guys, get in,” Nikki yelled at us as she pulled up in Derek’s car.
Sam and I got in the backseat. I gagged in the stuffy car as the smoke choked me. Derek drove us out of town. We turned off the highway onto an old dirt road. Darkness surrounded the small car. The heavy sound of Blood for Blood filled the car. I rolled down my window as I got nauseous from the cigarette smell and my anxiety for the future events of the night. Nikki turned down the music.
“Did you guys hear the story about the house we’re going out to?” she asked.
“Not yet,” I said. “Do tell, do tell.”
“Well, one hundred years ago today there was a party held there. All the teens in the town gathered out at the house that was only a few years old at the time,” she paused for a moment then continued. “Slowly, one by one, they started disappearing. Nobody realized until there were only half of the people left. Some went outside to see if the cars were gone and never came back. Then five were left in the house alone together, two boys and three girls. They never ended up finding out what happened to the five, but they were never seen again.”
“Wow, that’s kind of ere,” Sammie whispered.
“The house has been deserted since, we’re the first to go out there in one hundred years,” Nikki added in, the perfect finish to her story.
“I don’t believe it,” Derek grunted. “Nikki, you’re so gullible you would believe it.”
“I’m getting a really bad feeling about this,” Sammie whined. “I kind of want to go home.”
“No dude, we have to go. Can’t chicken out now,” I encouraged. “Plus, Joe most likely will be there.”
“Oh yeah,” she said, her eyes gleaming with the thought of Joe.
We basically flew down the twisty road. Our stomachs jumped as we went over the large hill. There was no house in sight. The moon now shone over the dying trees, the only light around besides our one headlight. We neared the end of the road, a dead end. There was still no house in view. We stopped the car.
“Get out and look around,” Derek told Nikki.
She got out and looked around carefully. There seemed to be no house. She walked to the side of the road and looked off into the woods then ran back to the car.
“Over there,” she said pointing in the direction she just came from. “There’s a small path with car tracks, it’s probably back there.”
“Get in,” Derek demanded.
He backed up then slowly pulled into the small trail. Branches scraped the sides of the car as we crept forwards carefully. We drove for what seemed to be miles into pure darkness. With the music still turned down all that we could hear was the frightening sound of the branches scraping our car.
“Maybe we should turn back,” Sammie blurted out with fear in her voice.
“How can we, I can’t turn around here? There’s no way,” Derek complained.
“Just keep on going,” I said, kind of annoyed.
“Look, there’s lights up ahead, behind those trees up there,” Nikki broke in excitedly.
“Sweet,” I added in.
We went around one finale curve. A large gate stood before us. A fence went around the area for as far as we could see in the darkness. Lanterns were set up along the gate, leading towards the hill that was just inside it. Pumpkins sat in piles next to the two large gargoyles that sat on both sides of the gate.
“Okay, now we turn back,” Sammie commanded.
“No, it’s just getting fun,” I laughed back at her.
“Stoop sitting here, let’s go in,” Nikki encouraged as she slapped Derek’s leg.
The car lurched forwards almost instantly. We crawled up the hill with ease. Once at the top Nikki was the first to gasp in shock. A large house stood before us. It was covered with overgrown vines that appeared to be dead. No cars were in view.
We drove down the hill into the large yard. Derek then noticed the tire tracks of many cars. We followed the tracks around the back of the house. About fifteen cars sat there. There was still no sign of life. We didn’t even bother trying to identify any of the cars. We parked the car out back then walked around to the front yard. Nikki clung to Derek in fear. Sammie and I just followed them, Sammie almost in tears.
There were carved pumpkins sitting on the large covered porch. That would have been the only sign of life beside us. Derek walked right up to the door and used the large knocker, banging it against the door three times. We stood in silence for a few minutes. Just as we were about to turn around and head back to the car, the door flung open. Loud music came pouring out. Dracula stood before us.
“Ahhhhh…” Sammie screamed in fear.
I jumped. My heart raced.
Nikki let out a little cry then clung to her Derek.
“Hey man, what’s up?” Derek said as he did his little handshake.
I recognized that it was Charles as we entered the large house. Others were also dressed up. Antique furniture filled the house as I walked through. I saw many people I knew as I lost Nikki and Derek. Sammie stayed by my side.
“Hey, there’s Joe,” she said, pointing over at the punch bowl and snack table. She ran away from me over to him.
I stood there by myself for awhile, kind of zoning out. I then heard someone saying my name.
“Amber,” the voice said. “Amber, you alright.”
I awoke instantly and looked around. Nessa stood before me, she smiled at me as she spoke.
“How you doing?” she asked me.
“Just got here,” I replied.
“Have some punch,” she said. Then she whispered, “It’s great, someone spiked it with vodka.”
I grinned as she walked away. I made my way over to the punch bowl, poured myself a cup, then stood there looking around. I slowly sipped the punch, the bitter taste filling my mouth. My stomach burned as the cold liquid glided into it. I took down my third glass of punch. I started feeling lightheaded. For the first time I really looked at the inside of the house. Cobwebs hung everywhere. The only lighting was that of candles set up all over the place. I felt alone and secluded. I chill ran threw my body as a cold breeze went by me. Now very lightheaded I tried finding a place to sit down. I led myself to the couch and sat down. I don’t really know what happened for some time after I sat down. I must have blacked out.
“Uhhh…” I grunted out. I lye on my stomach, head in someone’s lap.
I awake completely. Then I rolled over and sat up slowly. I looked around the candlelit room. It didn’t look as it did before. I started crying, my fear overcoming me. Someone wrapped their arms around me, I didn’t bother identifying them at the moment. I pressed my head against his chest. Then I felt it. I stopped sobbing. Something cold, something metal scraped against the flesh on my back. I froze in place then slowly looked up. An evil grin looked down upon me.
He pulled the blade away from my back as to get a better force when he stabbed me. I took that moment to free out of his grip. I started to crawl away as fast as I could. I reached the door, tried the knob. Locked. I cried out. He came charging at me, knife held high. I ducked as he stabbed it into the door. I ran to the window, it wouldn’t budge.
“Damnit!” I cried out, still trying to get it to budge.
He got the knife unstuck and started running towards me. The window flew open just as he reached me. I jumped out, eyes closed tightly, and landed with a thud.
“Oh my god!” someone screamed from above. “Wholly crap!”
Some people ran outside to see what was wrong with me. I stood up, laughing.
“That was great!” I said smiling.
“Are you okay?” Lee asked, wrapping his arm around me for support.
“Oh yeah! Just need another drink.”
“Get the girl a drink!” people started chanting.
Someone handed me a half-empty bottle of vodka. I chugged down the rest. Everyone went back into the house. Lee walked me in, him basically tripping over his own feet, too.
The room spun in circles. I fell to the floor in a heap. Mike, the only sober person I could find, him being Straight Edge, took me into the bathroom. He held back my hair as I vomited into the toilet.
“This is exactly one of the reasons I don’t do that stuff,” he said once again. “You almost done?”
“I think so.”
“Well I’m going back out there, are you going to be okay?”
“Yeah, I’ll be there in a minute.”
He then left me. I sat on the floor for awhile, regaining my thoughts. I got up and turned the faucet on. Cold water poured out. The water splashed against my tender flesh waking me up. Once alive again I went back to the party.
“Hey everyone, go to the kitchen!” someone yelled.
A crowd of people rushed towards the door to the kitchen. I slowly followed behind them. There was silence. A few screams followed. Then I heard her cries.
“Joe, my poor Joey,” Sammie cried out.
Mike pulled her off of Joe’s unconscious body. He lay on the floor, face down, naked. There was blood coming out of his nose, probably broken from a fall. His head was soaked in his own vomit. I walked away in disgust. For some reason I felt really chipper, probably the alcohol still running through my system. Where are Nikki and Derek? I decided to look for them. Check the bedroom, something told me. I didn’t want to see what they were doing anymore so I decided to stop looking.
“Amber, I’m so depressed, come here,” Sammie whined out.
I walked over and sat down next to her on the couch.
“What’s wrong?” I asked.
“It’s Joe.”
“Not again. Come on Sammie, get over him.”
“It’s not that easy.”
“Why not? I mean he’s a drunk and is such a jerk to you.”
“I know, but I can’t help it.”
“A little birdie told me that Ryan, he’s over there, likes you.”
“Really?”
“Go get ‘em Sammie.”
She got up and went over to the short blond guy in the corner. She wrapped her arms around his neck and kissed him. I turn away from them and smile to myself. I look around the room. Probably half of the people are gone now. Then I notice who’s sitting next to me on the couch. Chris! My heart starts to flutter. I feel my face turn red. He actually showed up! I turn away quickly before he notices my red face. I have to look back. He’s looking at me, I nearly faint.
“Hi,” he said, smiling at me.
“Hello,” I choked out.
“Is it just me or is everyone disappearing?” Chris asked me.
“I noticed that too. I wonder where everyone went.”
“This place is so spooky. I’m usually up for a good scare but this is just way too weird.”
“Who are you here with?” I asked him.
Then came an awkward moment of silence. He never did answer me. All of the candles blew out when a gust of wind came from the door, as it slammed shut. We sat there together in total darkness and silence.
“What just happened?” I whispered as I slid closer to him on the couch.
Chris wrapped his arms around me. I shivered against his slender body.
“Anyone in here?” he called out.
There was no answer.
He picked up a candle. He lit it with a lighter that he pulled out of his pants pocket. The room glowed. Our shadows flickered on the walls, this scared us at first until we realized that the walls were made of mirrors.
Two pairs of footsteps came running down the stairs. The two people came into view, Nikki and Derek. She clung to Derek, screeching as she saw Chris and me.
“Nikki!” I shouted.
“Is anyone else here?” Chris asked.
“I don’t think so, man,” Derek answered.
“Nikki, you’re crying, what’s wrong?” I asked her.
She didn’t answer me. Derek wrapped his arms around her and kissed the top of her head. She stopped crying almost instantly. Chris wrapped his arms around me like we actually knew each other, maybe we did and didn’t realize it yet.
Then it started, a loud, frantic crying.
“It’s Sammie!” I cried out. “I know that desperate cry from anywhere.”
I quickly pulled away from Chris and started calling her name.
“Sammie. Sammie. Sam, where are you?”
I stopped. Waited for a response.
“Amber?” her voice finally came. “Amber, I’m down here, in the basement. Help!”
I ran to the door that led down there. It was jammed. It wouldn’t budge.
“Sammie, come to the door, I can’t open it.”
Chris came from behind me and tried opening the door.
“I can’t get to the door,” she called back, her voice cracking. “There’s all of these bodies in the way.”
It took me a moment to figure out what she had said. I started to cry once it hit me. The door finally budged open. Several bodies fell out as Chris jumped away. I just about vomited as the demolished bodies fell out in a heap. Chris wrapped his arms around me, putting my head in his chest so I couldn’t see anymore. Sammie crawled out, all bloody.
“Help me!” she cried as she hit the floor.
I crawled over to her and hugged her body.
“Let’s get out of here,” Derek demanded.
“Good idea, exactly what I was thinking,” Chris added. He picked me up off the floor. I took Sammie up with me.
Derek walked to the door and attempted to open it. It was locked form the outside. We took our one lit candle and tried all of the windows and doors in the house. They were all locked form the outside.
“Is there a phone?” Nikki asked us.
“Nope, Charles said that he was going to cut off all communication,” Derek answered.
“Hey guys,” a voice came from behind us. “You’ll never leave alive.”
We all turn around instantly. Charles stood before us, gun in hand.
“I’ll enjoy sacrificing you guys the most,” he continued. “You will die, just like the rest of them.”
“Why?” I asked.
“Because I said so.”
BAM! BAM!
Nikki let out a cry as she fell to the floor dead. Derek kneeled before her crying.
BAM!
Derek fell beside his love.
“Kiss,” Charles said.
“What?” Chris questioned.
“KISS!” he demanded. “I’ll give you your first and last all in one. Now kiss!”
Chris pulled me close. We wrapped our arms around each other. We kissed the last kiss. I felt scorching pain in my back as my body fell limp. Chris held my dying body until we finally fell together on the hard floor.
“Now for you Sammie,” he whispered. “You will be mine for eternity!”
She shuttered in disbelief. He pulled her close and kissed her.
“Mine,” Charles said to his beautiful wife. “All mine.”
