The pictures you see below are of "my" lake. I live in the Upper Peninsula of
Michigan, and I just read a statistic the other day that I thought was
fascinating. It seems that here in the Upper Peninsula, you are never more
than 7 miles away from some body of water.... be it lake, river, stream or
pond. And, of course there is the Grand Lady of them all - Lake Superior -
right here at my doorstep.
Lake Superior covers over 31,280 square miles and contains three quadrillion
(3,000,000,000,000,000)
gallons of water. That's 10 percent of the world's fresh surface water and
half of the water in the Great Lakes. Or let me put it this way...
Superior contains enough water to flood all of Canada, the United States,
Mexico and South America with a foot of water.
By now, you might have guessed that I'm a real water baby. My idea of a
perfect day starts with a cup of coffee in hand as I walk down to the lake to
see what's new. There's always something. Sometimes Mother Duck swims by
proudly with her brood.... other times I'm fortunate enough to spot our
resident loon. On a good day, the majestic Bald Eagles will give me a show
as they hunt for their breakfast. As I stand there, breathing deep of the
fresh air, it's easy to give in to the serenity and leave my cares behind.
The lake changes constantly. It comes alive during the day with the sound of children's laughter,
the hum of fishing boats, and the angry buzzing sound of the jet skis.
Ahhhh, but when evening comes and the sun is setting it's a different place
again. If I listen closely, I think sometimes I hear it softly sighing...
content that it has provided a day of fun and wonder for everyone.
And then,
it's work not quite done, it provides a backdrop for the moonlight - allowing
it to dance on it's surface, while inviting the stars to twinkle in its
mirrored reflection... A magical place, my lake.
Well, I've taken enough of your time for now. But do come back later and
visit with me again. And feel free to leave me a note on my message board.
