FOR RICHER OR POORER

On December 12, 1997, Tim Allen's fifth major motion picture was released. The film, For Richer or Poorer, was still a comedy but was different from his previous work. The romantic comedy starred Allen as Brad Sexton and Kirstie Alley as his wife Carol. The Sextons are among the richest of New York City, but it turns out Brad's accountant (Wayne Knight) has shown a little bit of insincerity and soon Brad and Carol are wanted for tax evasion. So the couple, who has suddenly been fighting, go on the run and wind up at an Amish farm in Pennsylvania pretending to be "the cousins." What ensues is a clash of two worlds: the comfortable New York City life Brad and Carol were used to, and the hard-working life they must lead in Amish country. They have no choice but to get used to the Amish ways or else they IRS will find them. This PG-13 film is quite different from Tim's two earlier live-action Disney films, and not as good as his earlier work. But it has its moments and Allen and Alley do turn in some funny scenes. The film (which was released by Universal Pictures and the Bubble Factory) co-starred Jay O. Sanders, and was directed by Brian Spicer. Buy this movie on video or DVD.
