May 28, 2004 - Finally, the news we've all been waiting for. "Home Improvement" is coming to DVD...in season sets! Season 1 is scheduled for November 30, 2004. More information is available at UltimateDisney.com. More details at they come in!

December 30, 2003 - Yes, the sad news you may have heard about is unfortunately true. Earl Hindman, who for eight seasons played the wise and mysterious neighbor Wilson Wilson on "Home Improvement", passed away Monday, December 29 at a hospital in Stamford, Connecticut at the age of 61. Hindman died of lung cancer.

Earl Hindman: Rest In Peace

Put "Home Improvement" on DVD!

Surely, the studio that's putting out season sets of "Felicity" can do the same for their all-time top-rated show, right?

You may get your "Sanford and Son" and "Married...with Children" season sets...but this is about "Home Improvement" - THE family sitcom of the '90s. Need I remind Disney and you the reader of how popular this show was...
1991-92: Ranked 5th among All TV Programs (4th among non-news programs), First Season
1992-93: Ranked 3rd among All TV Programs (2nd among non-news programs), Second Season; Forces "Seinfeld" to move to Thursday nights because it OWNS Wednesdays
1993-94: The #1 Non-News Program in the Nation, 2nd only to "60 Minutes", Third Season;
1994-95: Ranked 3rd among all TV Programs, Fourth Season;
1995-96: Ranked 7th among all TV programs, 5th-highest sitcom, Fifth Season;
1996-97: Ranked 9th among all TV programs, 7th-highest sitcom, Sixth Season;
1997-98: Ranked 11th among all TV programs, 6th-highest sitcom, Seventh Season;
1998-99; Ranked 10th among all TV programs, 5th-highest sitcom, 8th & Final Season;

I'm not making this stuff up...check the records! More of the DVD-buying public watched the first five seasons of "Home Improvement" than any other TV show in those years.

Currently, it's among the 20 most-watched Syndicated TV programs.

What's the hold up, Disney? Put "Home Improvement" on DVD...IN COMPLETE SEASON SETS!

Maybe in time for Christmas? After all, wouldn't it be wonderful to unwrap this among the presents underneath the tree...

Finally, I've updated the Home Improvement Store, with links to buy various books, CDs, and DVDs related to the show and its cast members.

March 4, 2003 - Word from Tim himself is that both Public Enemy and StarChild are still in various stages of development. In addition, it appears that The Santa Clause 3 is only in planning stages, unlike the Father Knows Best film, which seems a-go. Still no air date set for the Retrospective and no release date set for the Home Improvement DVD(s). As for the rest of the cast, you may wonder:

Patricia Richardson (Jill) can be seen 9 PM Sunday nights on Lifetime's drama "Strong Medicine." Earl Hindman (Wilson) has recently been playing Julius Caesar in the Shakespeare play in New York City. Richard Karn (Al Borland) can be seen regularly as the host of "Family Feud" which runs in syndication. Debbe Dunning (Heidi) had a role in Now You Know, a comedy marking the writing/directing debut of Kevin Smith film regular Jeff Anderson. Zachery Ty Bryan (who's apparently dropped the "Ty") appeared in an episode of "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" last fall. His television brother, Jonathan Taylor Thomas, also made a fall TV appearance, on "Smallville." And Taran (Noah) Smith, who played the Taylors' youngest son Mark, is apparently happily married now.

Meanwhile, Tim Allen has plans to star in Paramount's film remake of television's "Father Knows Best", in the title role. Also, Tim is close to penning a new 2-film deal with Disney, which is expected to include a Santa Clause 3 film, to arrive in theaters possibly next year. Read more about this.

No update on the "Home Improvement" DVD situation, except that many fans have been voicing their desire for complete season sets, rather than selected episodes in a "Best Of" disc. Hopefully, Disney will reconsider their release strategy.

January 26, 2003 - Friday night in California, Tim Allen, Richard Karn, and Debbe Dunning were on hand to tape "The User's Guide to Home Improvement", a special retrospective of our favorite show for ABC. The special is scheduled to air during either Februrary or May sweeps and contains a mix of questions and answers, reflections, and clips from the show. During the night, HI's executive producer Carmen Finestra confirmed that a DVD with the ten best "Home Improvement" episodes would be coming at some point in the near future. While any "Home Improvement" on DVD is more than welcome, let's hope that this is just a market-test to preceed complete season sets, like most other TV shows are receiving from studios. Of course, it's a bit disappointing to only have 10 episodes on DVD...and who determines which are the best?

January 4, 2003 - Happy New Year! Word is that Disney is planning to release just ten episodes of "Home Improvement" to DVD in the near future. I recommend e-mailing Disney's marketing department (Disneyinfo@Disneyhelp.com) and letting them know you would prefer complete Season Sets. Seems odd that BVHE would even consider releasing anything other than season sets, with TV seasons selling as well on DVD as they are now (The Simpsons, X-Files, Mad About You Disney's own Sports Night, etc.). In more positive news, the "Home Improvement" retrospective is tentatively scheduled to tape on January 24, and to air on ABC on February 20th. Richard Karn and Debbe Dunning are expected to join Tim Allen for the taping. Tickets are not yet available.

Check out TVTome.com, where you can rate "Home Improvement" episodes and read synopses of all the episodes, and see what episodes are the most beloved.

November 4, 2002 - Tim Allen's new film, The Santa Clause 2 opened #1 at the box-offices this weekend, earning $29 million and handily defeating competition I Spy. With regards to the Home Improvement Retrospective that was supposed to be taped today, that has been pushed back to January, to most likely air in May. For more info and tickets, visit tvtickets.com.

More news...new Discussion Board is now up and running: HI Zone Forum, though empty and to be formatted and spruced up soon. Still other news, if you missed A & E's one-hour "TVography" special on HI, it will be re-airing at Midnight EST. Or you can buy it on video for $19.95 from AandE.com's store. Finally, Jonathan Taylor Thomas will be appearing in November 19's episode of "Smallville". Don't miss it.

October 20, 2002 - I don't know if you can take two great news items within a week, but there is more information to support a release of "Home Improvement" on DVD next year. Lori MacPherson, the VP of brand marketing for Disney's Buena Vista Home Entertainment Department is quoted in a Video Store Magazine article about the popularity of Television shows on the DVD format. Ms. MacPherson says, “Once we see how the actual sales go [referring to the first wave of BV television releases, this November's ‘Sports Night’, ‘Felicity’ and ‘Time & Again’], we’ll start planning the next wave of releases. We have a lot of great properties to choose from, including ‘Home Improvement’ [emphasis added] and ‘The Golden Girls.’ We also have Miramax as part of the family, and they recently acquired ‘The Osbournes.’”
