Who Will Be Your Valentine?

It’s hard to believe that February is already here. February symbolizes love more than any other month on the calendar. I remember when I was in third grade. Everyone gave me a Valentines Card. Of course, I made sure that everyone got a card from me. It helped that the teacher had passed out a list of names so you wouldn’t forget anyone. My favorite cards were from the girls that I secretly liked and I had high hopes that they liked me too. I hoped that they would not make fun of what I had written in their card.

You will notice that young couples show their love for each other in the month of February more than any other time. I believe this has more to do with Valentines Day than anything else. Valentines Day is a day that you set apart to tell that special someone in your life that you really love them. You show this love in several different ways, by giving flowers, candy, a card, a romantic dinner, and/or a special gift. The hope is that this special person feels the same way about you.

Go back over the years and take a long, hard look at your life. Just how many people do you remember as being that someone special, that person that you had promised to be their Valentine? All too often we lose sight of what true love really is. We focus on physical appearances and not those things that really make up the person. I just wonder how many people can say that the person they’re married to is their best friend. There are so many single people that are looking for a best friend to spend the rest of their lives with. Which is more important, spending your life with someone that looks good, or spending your life with someone that you can share your every thought with? This is not to run down good-looking people. It’s meant to open the eyes of individuals that look only at the shape of the body, instead of the heart, mind, and soul.

The true make up of a person lies deep within. That which can be seen with the eye has absolutely nothing to do with a person’s thoughts, feelings, or even how they show compassion towards others. You must talk to a person to really understand their beauty. You must see them interacting with others to know what they represent.

You must feel a special drawing toward a person to really ‘fall in love’ with them. You will probably possess a desire to spend every waking moment with him or her. You cling to every word they speak and are in awe of their every movement. You could not live another day with out them. Even more so, you don’t want that day to ever come when he or she is not in your life.

My dictionary defines Valentine as “sweetheart chosen on St. Valentine’s Day; card containing profession of love, sent on St. Valentine’s Day, February 14.” Sweetheart means “lover or beloved person; darling.” Darling means “beloved or loveable one; cherished.” The word Cherished means “…to hold dear; to treat tenderly; to foster.” All of these words express love and what love is. When I read the definition for Valentine, I see God and I want to show Him to you.

Did you know that you are God’s sweetheart! That’s right. God loves you. He doesn’t have to love you but He does. Why does He love you? Because He created you and He knew you before you were born (Jeremiah 1:5). God loves each and every one of us in a very special way. But most of all, God loves you the very same way He loves me. There is no difference.

The second part of the definition for the word Valentine says, “Card containing profession of love.” God’s valentine is called the Bible. Each and every page of the Bible has a different way of expressing God’s love. When you read the Bible and let God speak to you, He will show you that love. God wrote the Bible just to show his love for you.

Do you know that the first Valentine’s Day was over two thousand years ago when God’s only begotten Son, Jesus Christ, was crucified on the cross for our sins? And on the day of resurrection, Jesus was raised from the dead, which gave those who believe in Him victory over death.

God cherishes each and every one of us. You are dear to Him and He longs for you to draw near to Him. God watches over you, longing for the day when you will call on Him and allow Jesus to enter your life. Jesus wants to be your heart’s desire. He wants to be your Valentine. Believe it, or not you are already His Valentine.

John 3:16 say’s, “For God so loved the world that He gave His only Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life.”
