SONNY SEXTON

Dohn "Sonny" Sexton was born January 1921 to Burl and Clara Sexton of Hot Springs Arkansas. His father was a banjo player. Sonny picked cotton until he saved enough money to buy his first guitar at age 9. Then he and his father started playing together. At age 13, he played for Radio Stations KLCN, KWOC, and KMOX in Missouri where the family moved.

During the 1960s, in Michigan, Sonny's bar called the "Wagon Wheel" hosted many country music shows known at the "Michigan Jamboree". Many benefits were also held here for the less fortunate. In April 1995, he and his wife Bea celebrated 50 years of marriage.

Sonny Sexton was inducted into the Michigan Country Music Hall of Fame on September 9, 1995 at the Saginaw County Fair Grounds in Saginaw, Michigan.

Sonny's induction is available on video from MICHIGAN MAGAZINE Television. Visit the Official Michigan Magazine web site for more information.
