Sony Touts The PocketStation
01.25.99

Sony Computer Entertainment, Inc. has been pretty quiet about the PocketStation for quite some time. Revealed at last year's E3, this little gaming peripheral has been pretty undiscussed by Sony mainstays. However, things are apparently moving in the right direction, as SCEI distributed another press release today to begin the hype machine for this miniature gaming item.

Sony has selected Atmel Corporation as chip maufacturer for the PocketStation. Atmel is a supplier of high-performance chips and integration for the upcoming PocketStation. The single-chip device does many different things, from use Flash memory to store games, RAM for gameplay, and LCD controller, and even infrared communication.

"Atmel is a true system-level integration company that delivers results," said Ken Kutaragi, co-chief operating officer of Sony Computer Entertainment, Incorporated. "Atmel is enabling industry leaders like SCEI to extend its leadership in high-growth markets. Integrating Atmel's ASIC into our design helped reduce system costs and complexity while speeding our time to market. The design work on the critical ASIC was fully sustained by engineering support from Atmel's design center in Rousset, France."

So there it is. Will we be seeing the PocketStation soon? It appears so. Everybody's already bought up the Dual Shock.
