Acclaim is off to a good start in terms of selling games this year. Turok 2 is running off the shelves at an incredible pace and now Acclaim says South Park for the Nintendo 64 is experiencing similar success. According to Paul Eibeler of Acclaim North America, "...the first shipment of South Park sold out in record time."
Doreen McKenzie, divisional merchandising manager of video games for Babbage's Etc., said, "South Park was our number one selling Nintendo 64 title during Christmas week."
After consulting recent TRSTS data, we conclude that Acclaim might not be blowing smoke. From it's release just prior to Christmas until January 3, 1999, South Park has sold approximately 180,000 copies. That's about 77% of the nations retailers, so the number could be boosted even further to around 235,000 nationwide.
Acclaim also plans to release South Park internationally and on the PC this March, so the money generated by this title promises to remain somewhat steady as the South Park television show is also popular in Europe, according to Rodney Cousens, chief operating officer of Acclaim International.
