Sony Goes After Connectix

01.28.99
Sony released a brief statement yesterday about what it thinks concerning the Connectix Virtual Game Station. Apparently, Sony feels that the Virtual Game Station, introduced by Connectix for PlayStation gameplay on your Mac, "violates valuable intellectual property owned by Sony Computer Entertainment, Inc."

Part of Sony's reasoning stems from the fact that it is not "fully compatible with all PlayStation game titles, a fact supported by Connectix's own admissions." Another part of the reasoning is wedged in the fact that this item could encourage piracy.

"With the Virtual Game Station, Connectix has introduced a product into the market that circumvents the PlayStation anti-piracy protection that is designed to inhibit the illegal sale and distribution of counterfeit software." Sony stresses the point to include all PlayStation developers, saying that, "All PlayStation game publishers and developers could now lose sales to pirated goods as a direct result of the Connectix product."

Sounds like harsh words from here. Sony also makes it clear that no deal has been struck between Sony and Apple or Connectix for the Virtual Game Station. The amount of damages Sony is seeking is unspecified.
