Hands On: Micro Machines 64 Turbo

02.10.99
Micro Machines 64 Turbo, from Codemasters and Midway, headed into our offices this morning. Disregarding the oversaturation of racing titles (of which Midway is partly responsible for), this game is a pretty good one for people who are just in it all for fun. Take your pick of tracks, ranging from a dinner table to a science laboratory, as you race to the finish against other miniaturized vehicles. Along the way you'll discover items that harm the opposition in amusing and dastardly ways. Four modes of play are available, 1 Player, Multi Player, Teams, and Party Play. Up to four players can race at once in Party Play and Teams modes. As in the previous PlayStation version, players can race against the computer in Championship and try to unlock more cars for use in Party Play. Cars that have been collected can be traded, raced for keeps, or simply looked at.

The only new feature the Nintendo 64 version has that its predecessor did not is the option of choosing different turbo speeds for the races, ensuring added difficulty and excitement for the expert player. Apart from that, it is a carbon copy, with the added effects capabilities of the N64 thrown in (such as waves in water). Micro Machines 64 Turbo should release sometime in the spring, so keep an eye out, if you are in the market for a quirky racing game.
