Hands On: Hybrid Heaven

Konami, it seems, has been really thinking about what to put out on the Nintendo 64. Its next game, Hybrid Heaven, is an interesting RPG variant, borrowing unique ideas from other games and also implementing new ideas. Your character is Diaz, who has been genetically altered and is trying to escape from a secretive underworld, filled with mutants and genetic failures, located deep beneath New York City.

Utilizing an engine that looks strikingly like the one in Castlevania 64, Hybrid Heaven is basically an RPG. However, instead of using turn-based attacks, the characters move about in real time and try to beat each other to the next move. Similar to Sega's Panzer Dragoon Saga, a meter indicates when Diaz can attack again, and available moves -- punches, kicks, grapples, and combos are all possible. While the meter is building, Diaz can maneuver into a better position. Unlike Panzer, however, players can block, dodge attacks, and counter.

As with any RPG, items are found that do a variety of things, including an assortment of weapons. Diaz gains experience according to how well he fought and which body parts he used (similar to Tobal 2's Quest mode). Extensive voice overs add to the immersion factor of the game, as do the cinematic cutscenses. At the very least, Hybrid Heaven is definitely a game to watch for in 1999. At the most, it could be one of the best games the N64 ever sees. Be sure to look for Hybrid Heaven in May.
