A New Player: Sandbox Studios

01.29.99
There's a new developer in town, and interestingly enough, it's not developing for the PlayStation. Sandbox Studios is the name of the company, and it plans to release action, sports, and kid's titles to the Nintendo 64, Game Boy, and Dreamcast. Sandbox has been diligently working on tools that will enable it to put games out in six months or less, from conception to completion.

Steve Bergenholtz, president of Sandbox Studios and former president of Utopia Technologies (makers of Montezuma's Revenge and Montezuma's Return), had this to say: "I'm very excited about the potential of what I can do with the tools I've developed. The technology our team has created over the last seven months will allow us to develop a variety of software titles in much less time that usual. The idea that a quality PC game or video game takes one or two years to develop is a thing of the past. With the right tools, like the ones I've created, Sandbox and other developers who license our technology will be able to create software titles from conception to completion in three to six months."

As you just read, Sandbox is also attempting to license the engine technology out, making the engine itself seem pretty sharp. No details on specific games were declared, but announcements are planned in the coming weeks.
