ICAN was established in the early 1990's by a group of parents who had children born with anophthalmia/microphthalmia in the Philadelphia, PA area. They enlisted the help of Dr. Adele Schneider, a geneticist working at AEMC.

Dr. Schneider and her great team has started a register of children born with A/M. They have since received grants from the MARHGN foundation for their research into causes for anophthalmia and microphthalmia.

DNA Research

Four new genes have been added to the 10 genes that we are already screening. The researchers are in the United States, Italy, Scotland, and Spain!

AEMC is continuing to collect DNA samples to examine genes known to be involved in the eye development. DNA samples are collected from affected individuals with A/M and relevant family members and are obtained by collecting buccal mucosa (cheek cells) and /or blood.

With research there is no promise of an answer, but the more families that participate the better chances are that they WILL find something!
