(July 28, 2003)
Good Lord. Almost six months have gone by since the last update. That's ridiculous. I am ashamed. Okay,
seriously... From now on, I'm updating this at least every month. No Joke.
I can't believe it. Another six months. I've just realized that there's two reasons why I need to update this page
more often. I'm sure some of you smarties can figure out the obvious one... So everyone knows the latest
gossip. But the second reason, well... Simply because I can't remember probably 95 percent of the things that
happened in the last six months. That sounds bad, but you need to give me more credit. It's not that I was too
drunk to remember anything, because I haven't really drank much since that last update. Honestly. And it's not
that I don't have the memories somewhere in my head, it's just that I can't pull six months of them out onto this
page all at once. Maybe if I sit here long enough, I'll remember them and this update will be monstrous. Either
way though, I will truly update this more often.
At any rate, what have I been up to? No Idea. In February, other than work and school, I remember going to
some sweet basketball games, like when we had the chance to beat Syracuse at home, but the shot bounced
out. That sucked, but anything that makes the heart skip a beat is always welcome. I also had the opportunity
to get some extra Izzone Tickets for my older brother and sister for the Purdue game. Yeah, Purdue Schmurdue,
but still, that was definitely a good time.
In March, hehe, I turned 21. No, I didn't do 21 shots. No, I didn't drink so much that I was obliterated and
puking all over everything. Since it was during MSU's Spring Break, my good friends from school were spread
across the Western Hemisphere, and my poor ass was half in Sketown and half in Lansing, working. So, I
simply went to the bar with a few good friends that I graduated with, had a few drinks, and went home. Yes, I
know for your 21st you're supposed to get plastered and start slurring out jibberish, but I couldn't. I had no
heavyweights to drink with. No harm done though, because a week later, I experienced my first "Happy Hour"
at the Riv with Vin and peeps, and yes, I made up for my 21st. Let's just say I thought I lost over two hours of
my night, only to find out later that my cell phone and my thoughts of what happened were all messed up. I
made up for my BDay. Trust me.
Next comes the NCAA Tournament. The 7th-Seeded Spartans, who were eligible to make the Tourney (unlike
the nasty Wolverines down the road, hehe), beat Colorado, Florida, and defending champion Maryland to make
it to the Elite Eight. The night we beat Maryland was a crazy one in East Lansing, but it was only a sample of
what was to come. That win produced a "celebration" in the streets outside of my apartment complex (Cedar
Village is where the Party Always Is). That celebration included thousands of students, forcing police to wear
riot gear, just in case. Luckily, nothing too serious occured that night.
Two nights later however, when MSU lost to Texas in the Elite Eight, East Lansing turned into a Warzone.
Even before the game, you knew something was up. In preparation for whatever was to happen, the City of
East Lansing hired extra police for the evening. Before tipoff, I remember looking out Vin's apartment window
and seeing a line of fifty (Yes, I was so amazed, I counted) riot police marching by, just to let the students know
that they were there. On top of that, there were already six patrol cars parked along the road, and State Police
cars would drive by every five minutes. They even brought in riot police on horseback. It looked as if they were
prepared to prevent anything, but it also looked as if they were trying to say, "We're Ready. Bring It!"
Well, MSU did. Even more students flowed onto the streets after the loss, and I suppose the police presence
did its job at Cedar Village, because nothing serious went on outside our apartments. It was when the mob of
students ran elsewhere that mayhem began. Fires were started, the main one on Grand River Avenue. I
remember looking across the road and seeing some guys throw newspaper into the street, and one guy was
just standing in the road stopping the traffic. Keep in mind, this is the main road that goes through East
Lansing. When they lit the papers on fire, Yeah...Not much to say. A fire in the middle of the cities' main road, a
mob of people around it watching, and traffic at a dead halt because of it. Some things just can't be described in
words. I'm not saying I was there, but let's just say THAT feeling is much easier described with words than the
one I had when I looked up and saw riot police running towards us shooting canisters of teargas. You haven't
lived until you've had teargas shot in your direction. That got my heart going just as fast as jumping out of an
airplane did. Whew. Good Times.
That was probably the greatest excitement of the school year right there. Other than that, PDiddy and I
received one eviction notice for having a party where limes were thrown off our balcony towards the building
across the way (hmm), and a second eviction notice for getting a noise violation during a little shindig we had.
We got out of both of those eviction notices, just because DTN Housing was retarded and blah blah...
Basically DTN Sucks. As for that noise violation, I went to court to try and get out of it, but, $225 later, the
judge said "Whateva." Not really, but he might as well have.
AND... Even with all this craziness going on, and even with me being at Staples 30-35 hours a week, I still found
time to miss the Dean's List this semester by INCHES. Seriously. Inches. 2 Percent Higher in any class and I,
Chris Maleski, had Dean's List. Yes, it IS possible, and I plan on hitting it this year. You watch.
Anyways, my summer has been passing rather quickly. In May, I worked all month. Apparently every day all
day, because I don't remember anything exciting out of May. In June, between work and my lack of sleep, Vin
found the chance to invite me up to HTown (Hart, MI 49420) to play some softball with him and his teammates
in a little tournament. Now, when I was a little Christopher, I used to love to play baseball. Baseball was my
sport. I played it from when I was about 5 to when I was almost 17 years old. Before this tourney, I'd played one
game of intramural softball in four years. But playing in these games made me realize just how much I missed
the sport. Despite the fact that our team didn't win any of the four games, I still had a blast and I thank Vin
for hooking me up with the opportunity.
July. Ahh. Here we are. FINALLY. July. See, I told you if I sat here long enough I would remember. Anyways...
The weekend of the 4th. Wow. Kevin came around the big pond to Sketown from Milwaukee, Vin came down
from HTown, more people from State were in town, the Summer Celebration was going on, and we all could
legally drink. That about sums it up. Vin, Bob, Kev and I went to the Our Lady Peace/Three Doors Down show.
OLP Rules! Kevin and Vin met my sister at that concert, Kev tried to hook up with one of her 26ish year-old
friends (and he almost did), and I got to hang with those two boyz from State along with Lance, Alicia, Trisha,
Kaiser, and many other good friends from my hometown. Even with the LAME fireworks show on the 4th, that
weekend was easily the best of the year so far. I had so much fun.
So here I am. July 28th. 5:01 AM. Yes, that's a five. No work tomorrow though, so don't worry. I don't have to
set an alarm for the first time in a long while. It's going to be nice. I suppose I'll end this with the latest, latest
news. As of 5:00 AM, I have 119 of 1500 minutes left on my cell phone for the month. The only problem is, I
have 12 days left in my monthly billing cycle. hehe. All I have to say is... Quoting from a LEGEND, and a good
friend... "Everything happens for a reason." I'm out. PEACE.
(January 30, 2003)
Well Well. It's almost February already. It was just New Years. Actually, it was just July, like two months ago.
Alright, well, maybe not, but it sure does seem like it. This school year is going by ridiculously fast. I guess
that's kind of a good thing, but then again, not so much. I don't know about you, but for me, the faster that
time seems to go by, the less I remember about it. Ask me what I did last semester, and I wouldn't have a clue.
Anyways... This semester. Hm. Not a whole lot has changed since the last, which, actually I never even
wrote on here what was going on then. See, I didn't even have time to update my webpage last semester.
That's how fast it was going by.
Last semester then, I basically had 14 credits of classes and worked 30-35 hours per week at, where else, but
Staples. See, the thing with Staples is the fact that, despite how much stress it can cause with scheduling and
the managers sometimes not being cool, it is actually worth the hassle. With this being a college town and all,
about three-fourths of the people I work with are college students. This is why I deal with the hassle, because,
hehe, we sure do have some fun there. And, rumor has it, Money is good.
Classes last semester consisted of the MOST FUN CLASSES I've ever experienced here at State. Holy Sarcasm
Batman. My classes were: Intro to MicroEconomics, History & Economics of Telecommunications, Intro to
Telecomm Technology, and New Media/Old Media. Good Lord. The Telecomm classes were decent; the
Microeconomics class was a virtual/online course which made it pretty cool because I could view the lectures
at 1 AM if need be; but the New Media/Old Media... that takes the cake as worst class at Michigan State
University. It was supposed to be a course on "The uses and social effects of the Internet and other New
Media of Communication." The course, in actuality, was focused strictly on Internet Research and how it is
done; was taught by an Asian who could barely speak English (I'm not racist I just think professors at this
university should know how to speak the language fluently); and ended with a Group Project that taught us
absolutely nothing. Talk about a waste of time, money, and effort. At any rate, last semester was the third
semester in a row that my GPA has gone up. I suppose it isn't that hard to do when you bomb your freshman
year, but still, it's a nice thought.
This semester, my classes are actually on the positive side. They consist of: Intro to Marketing, Industrial
Sociology, Intro to Digital Media Arts, and Basic Telecomm Policy.
The Marketing course is the only one that's in question, since it's a class of about 700 people and is
pretty boring. The only thing that keeps people from just taking the posted lecture outlines from the web is
the fact that attendance is 20% of our grade. Gotta love that.
Industrial Sociology is actually a lot more interesting than one would think. It's simply how industry has
affected society, which makes it sound like a class you would rather NOT take. The professor, however, makes
it interesting, cares that his students learn from his class, has been teaching for around thirty years, and, since
he's traveled around the world studying the subject, truly knows his stuff.
The Digital Media Arts class is pretty sweet, since I'm learning about radio production, television
production/editing, and web page design. This is stuff that I'll most likely use when I get out of here.
The Telecomm Policy course would be pretty boring except for the professor that I have is one of the funniest
guys I've met. He definitely makes class interesting and eventful.
Between those classes and 30 hours of work per week this semester, I don't have too much free time. The time I
do have though, I'm managing to have a little bit of fun. Hehe. I turn 21 on March 5th, so finally I'll be able to
start drinking then. LoL Whoops. Nah, like I was saying, I've been having a little bit of fun, and yes, for all
those worried, I'm staying out of trouble. It's all good. Later.
Alright. Seriously. Can I just tell you all that "Summer+Classes+Work=Not Fun"? Let's just imagine going to
class from 12-5 Monday through Thursday, and working 40 hours a week on top of that. This SUCKS!
The good thing is that my classes only go until June 27th, so I'll have half the summer to enjoy.
As for school, I've officially changed my major from computer science to telecommunications. This
is due to computer science taking up way too much of my time, and the simple fact that there were
a total of maybe three females in the College of Engineering. Well, those aren't the only reasons, but
I have switched, and the College of Communications, Arts, and Sciences is looking much better. :)
As for my classes this summer, I'm taking my last required English class (Yay!) and the Introduction to
Telecommunications. I only took this English class over the summer because, SUPPOSEDLY, it's supposed
to be easier during the summer. Well, on the first day of class, my professor asked the class if any of
us were taking two classes this summer. When half the class raised their hands, he said,"Well, Good Luck."
Yeah. Ouch. Not usually a good sign when the Prof says that. Ah well though. I decided to be a trooper, and
I'm managing decently. My Telecommunications course is basically a class with a lot of "BLAH." I mean,
the professor is cool, but he just lectures for two hours straight each day, then gives two rather
difficult exams over the course of the semester. YAY! This is my summer.
So that's the latest with my classes. Fun Times.
The CLASS part of college is SUPPOSED to suck, apparently. The "College Life" part of college,
however, is tight like always. Since I'm living in an apartment here in LTown this summer, I
have quite a bit more freedom than I would have living in Sketown. Yes, It's all good.
So, I'm definitely enjoying the freedom, whether it's by playing Nintendo as much as Ryan and I want, by
drinking beverages, or by playing loud music, we're definitely having some fun and adding
to the list of interesting experiences.
