Our Story

This house isn't very much like what we first described to Livi at all. We were originally looking for a large lot with a big fenced-in back yard for the dogs and Desi's gardening, away from major traffic (for the dog's safety) and with a garage that I would make into an office. That's why Desi ended up finding this house herself, since Livi was sending us listings that matched our description. She said she nearly did send us this listing, but decided against it on account of the size of the yard.

I'd gotten tired of shopping, so Desi had been going out on the initial recons herself, and then returning with me later on to just those that really stood a chance. I'd already pretty much made up my mind about a house on 4th street, though, and I wasn't in a particularly good mood when we went to see this house.

It turned out I loved the house. We like it for its high ceilings, it's wood floors, it's awesome kitchen appliances, and lots of things, but the things that really did it for us were the location (and the view!) and the unique and undeniable charm and character of the house. No other house we'd seen had anywhere near the same depth and gravitas of this house, which is something only a house built around the turn of the century can have. I also, personally, fell in love with the third story studio, which we've decided to make into my office until we get the garage rebuilt.

Besides the obviously attractive characteristics of the house, it also had some things that were particularly compelling to Desi and I. She and I were married in Crane Park, which is directly across Westnedge from the house, about the same time that the previous owners were moving in. They did a TON of improvements to the house, expecting to stay, and then finding out in 2005 that they were to be relocated for work. Because of the relocation, we were able to get the house at such a deal that we wouldn't have acquired any more equity in a house if we'd bought one instead of renting these past three and a half years.

Buying this house was, quite seriously, destiny.
