The Star tool is one of the special class of tools that create Live Shapes. Live Shapes are objects that have special properties that can be edited after the object has been drawn. With the Star tool, the Inkscape artist can draw polygons and star shapes. As a Live Shape, the object created with the Star tool can be transformed to have any number of sides or points, the length and balance of the points can be altered, and the base and and tip points rounded.

The Star tool can be used to create a diverse set of shapes. When a default star is drawn, there will be two control handles, available to edit the shape, one on the tip, or radius, of the shape, the other on the base, or hub, of the shape. The tip control handle can be used to scale and rotate the shape. Check the Polygon option on the Tool Controls bar, and the shape will transform to a multi-sided shape without base control handle.
