    1998-1999
Hardaway posted a game-high 22 points, 7 rebounds and 4 assists in a 79-68 win over the Philadelphia 76ers in Game 2 of the Eastern Conference First Round. He also totaled a team-high 19 points, 6 assists, 5 rebounds and 3 steals against the Philadelphia 76ers in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference First Round. During the regular season Penny led the Magic in scoring (15.8 ppg) and steals (2.22 spg, 6th in the NBA) and ranked 2nd on the team in assists (5.3 apg). He led the Magic in assists in 22 games, in scoring in 18 games and in rebounds in 12 games, and logged 8 double-doubles. Penny scored 19 of his game-high 27 points in the 4th quarter, adding 6 rebounds and 5 assists, in an 88-81 win over the Detroit Pistons on April 18th. Hardaway registered a game-high 25 points (3-6 3FG), 9 rebounds, 7 assists and 3 steals against the Indiana Pacers on April 14th. He posted team-highs of 30 points (12-21 FG), 10 rebounds and 8 assists, and added 3 steals, in an 81-72 win over the New York Knicks on April 6th. He also totaled game-highs of 30 points (3-6 3FG) and 5 steals, adding 3 assists and 3 rebounds, in a 90-77 win over the Detroit Pistons on April 3rd. The Magic had the potential to go all the way but came up short by losing to the Sixers in the First Round of the Playoffs. Hardaway may become a free agent, but says he does want to stay in Orlando.

    1997-1998
Hardaway played just 19 games, missing most of the season because of torn cartilage in his left knee. He underwent surgery on December 10 and was sidelined for 26 games, returned to action at Houston on January 29 but played his last game of the season at New York on February 13. In his 19 games Hardaway led the Magic with 16.4 points and 1.47 steals per game and also averaged 4.0 rebounds and 3.6 assists in 32.9 minutes per game. He shot just .377 from the field and .300 from three-point range but connected on .763 from the foul line. Hardaway led Orlando in scoring six times, netting a season-high 32 points at Boston on November 2. He also surpassed the 30 mark in the season opener against Atlanta on October 31, netting 31. He scored in double figures in 16 of his 19 outings. Selected for the All-Star Game for the fourth time in his career, Hardaway had six points and three assists in 12 minutes.

    1996-1997
Expected to emerge as one of the league's top scorers following the departure via free agency of Shaquille O'Neal, Hardaway missed 23 games during the first half of the season because of a knee injury and did not quite live up to those projections. Nonetheless, he led the Magic with 20.5 points, 5.6 assists and 1.58 steals per game and also contributed 4.5 rebounds per game. He was named to the All-NBA Third Team. Hardaway played and started in 59 games, scoring in double figures in 56 of them and getting 20+ points 33 times and 30+ points six times, including a season-high 35 points in a 112-107 overtime loss at Atlanta on March 17. He handed out a season-high 13 assists in a 105-69 romp at Toronto on April 10. The Magic's go-to player, he connected on clutch free throws or baskets in the final 90 seconds of eight games to secure Orlando victories. Voted to the starting team for the All-Star Game, Hardaway scored 19 points, grabbed seven rebounds and handed out three assists in 24 minutes for the East in its 132-120 victory. After Miami grabbed a 2-0 lead over Orlando in their First Round playoff series, the Magic went to a three-guard alignment and told Hardaway to focus on scoring. He responded with 42 points in Game 3 and 41 in Game 4 as the injury-riddled Magic improbably tied the series. Hardaway scored 33 points in Game 5 but it was not enough as Miami prevailed. He finished as the second-leading scorer in the 1997 NBA Playoffs with a 31.0 average, just behind Michael Jordan's 31.1.
