HEART DISEASE

Information on Heart Disease

What Is Heart Disease and how do you prevent it?

In 1996, CVD claimed 959,227 lives (about 41.4% or 1 of every 2.4 deaths) -- in Michigan (1996) nearly 43% of all deaths were attributed to heart and stroke (ranking us in the top 7 of death rates for US states - the only states with higher death rates than Michigan are Arkansas, Oklahoma, Kentucky, Georgia, Alabama, W. Virginia, Tennessee, Louisiana, and Washington D.C.).The human heart is built for great endurance. There are billions of heart beats in an average lifetime but, like any other part of the body, it is able to breakdown. Heart problems vary very differently in their nature. They may be transient or chronic, slow-developing or sudden, inconvenient or deadly. Some types of heart disease, closely linked to diet and lifestyle choices, are preventable. Others that are due to genetic inheritance, infections or other uncontrollable factors are not able to be prevented. Two out of every five Americans will die of a heart disease. The daily death rate of heart disease is approximately 2,500 people. Fortunately, the death rate is declining. That is only because the United States has improved medical care and widespread public education about the risk factors of heart disease. There are many types of heart and blood vessel diseases. Over 60 million Americans have one or more of the kinds of heart diseases. In 1993, more than 950,000 people died from heart disease. Heart disease contains over 42 percent of all deaths in the United States! Yet many types of heart disease may be prevented. The keys are to:

* Stop smoking.

* Lower your blood pressure.

* Eat a healthy diet.

* Be physically active.

* Get regular medical checkups.
