Mexico is directly south of the United States. It covers a total of 756,066 square miles.
Mexican culture is a blend of Native American, Spanish, and American traditions. Rural areas are populated by Native Americans, descendants of the Maya, Aztec, and Toltecs, and by Spanish and mestizo farmers and laborers. In the cities live both European, mostly Spanish and French, and North American.
The Mexican film industry now makes about 40 to 50 films each year. Mexican film actors, including Cantinflas (Mario Moreno), Pedro Armendariz, and Dolores Del Rio, are famous worldwide, as well as director Emilio Fernandez and cinematographer Gabriel Figueroa. Both theatrical and musical performances, especially opera, are popular in Mexican cities. The Ballet Folklórico, a troupe specializing in Mexican folk dances, is based in Mexico City but tours internationally. Bullfighting, a reminder of Mexico's Spanish past, is still in practice.
Currently, Mexican economy is based on mining and agriculture. The government is starting to make leaps towards technology.
Mexico's land is basically a high plateau with two mountain ranges. The two mountain chains, the Sierra Madre Occidental to the west and the Sierra Madre Oriental in the east, meet in a region called La Junta in the southeast.
