Collector's Guide to Online Auctions

We use the Internet for collecting. As we become more Internet-savvy, we try our luck with online auction sites like eBay, Amazon.com, and Auctions.com to manage our collections and hunt for antiques. Many antique or collectible enthusiasts already use eBay and want to explore other auction sites, maybe to sell a few items or snag a rare find for a bargain. Just as collectors hunger for new and/or unusual items to add to their collections, you're also hunting for the best auction site. Maybe it's eBay, or one you like better.

Some collectors wish to explore auction sites beyond eBay, but have trouble getting started or don't know where to look. The Internet still intimidates people. Collector's Guide to Online Auctions is the collector and antique dealer's very own guide through the often intimidating world of online auction sites.

Once you gain momentum buying and selling items at online auction sites, you may seek advice on how to communicate effectively with repeat customers or sellers. You may be curious about what information to include when you contact the other participant via e-mail. Perhaps you're looking for a good template for a shipping note or an idea for a message to include with a check for payment.

Here's where I can help!

In Part One, I dissect the online auction process - from gavel to mouse-click - and describe everything you need to know to become a seasoned participant. While my first book covers online auctions in some detail, this one goes into the grit. When you're done with the first six chapters, you'll be ready to hit the sites and jump right into the "auction action."

Part Two covers several auction sites. I chose six popular sites and included a chapter for each one. Since many of several hundred auctions sites on the Internet use similar auction software, I selected sites that are similar in theory but different in operation. As you explore them with me you'll see what I mean!

For those of you wishing to further explore online auctions, you'll find a chapter with information about over fifty more auction sites, and several sites that provide special tools and information specifically for auction users. You're going to love it!

And if this all isn't enough, you'll find informational appendices that will help you format great-looking auction descriptions in HTML. You'll also find templates for effective email messages that will help you develop a good, safe rapport with your co-participants.

I invite you, the collector, to be part of the online auction fun with me. I hope you enjoy this book as much as I loved writing it for you.

Collector's Guide to Buying, Selling, and Trading on the Internet

The recent popularity of collecting lured many of us to the Internet, where we discovered our collecting soul mates. We buy, sell, and trade our treasures with people we know only from the on-line guestbooks and chat rooms. Some folks get it down right away, but others need a little nudge. The Internet can be scary if you don't know what's lurking!

I got my cyber-feet wet as a Web page designer for a major telecommunications company. At the same time I discovered the joy of collectibles. When met other collectors on the Web, I had great fun and my collections grew fast. Meeting so many people who shared my passion for collecting was lovely. Some have become lasting friends.

Another joyful discovery was the eBay auction site and others like it. What fun it is to bid on auctions from the comfort of my home office, without having to worry that scratching my nose will result in an untimely purchase! But how do they work? What are good selling and bidding strategies? And how on earth do some sellers get their auctions to look so NICE? And as with any public medium, there was danger lurking.

How lovely to have a handbook for this, I thought.

I read other people's testimonials, did months of research, and stored all this knowledge so I could share it with anyone using the Internet for buying, selling, and trading collectibles.

The Collector’s Guide to Buying, Selling, and Trading on the Internet covers the history of collecting, how to access the Internet, the best way to start or build your collections, and how to deal with people you know only from contact on a Web site. You’ll also learn how to register and bid smart at on-line auction sites like eBay. In case you’re interested in creating your own free home page, I include instructions for that as well.

I hope the insight I gained the last few years is of help to you in your collecting. I had great fun putting this book together, and I hope you have as much fun reading it.
