Over 4,100,000 shoe box gifts were collected and distributed by "Operation Christmas Child" last year. Thanks to everyone who took part in this project.

Shoebox gifts from northern Michigan ended up in the following countries:
Romania
Philippines
Ghana
Belarus
Letters from the children who received a shoebox gift have been received by people all over nothern Michigan. Three letters were received from the Philippines with 2 ebing from the city of Cebu. Thanks to everyone who has received a letter and has let us know about it so that we can spread the good news.

"Kids Helping Kids"
Each year through Operation Christmas Child a project of Samaritan's Purse thousands of individuals, families, churches, schools, and other groups in sending gift filled shoe boxes to hurting children in troubled parts of the world. Children all over the world who have been affected by war, famine, homelessness, poverty or abandoned by their parents will have at least one day of joy. Those who fill and send the shoe box gifts will find it is more blessed to give than receive. This also teaches our children to share with those who are less fortunate then we are. If you include your address the child might be able to write you back. It sure is a blessing to hear from them and to share the joy that they express. Also include a picture of yourself , family or group because they kids love to get the pictures and will treasure them. Operation Christmas Child is a project that we support. Following is some information about this project which is part of Samaritan's Purse. Franklin Graham is the President of Samaritan's Purses and is also Billy Graham's son. Operation Christmas Child (or OCC) gives individuals, families, churches, schools, and civic groups the opportunity to touch the lives of over 3 million poor children all over the world. You can help with this shoe box gift collection also in many different ways. Just fill a shoe box with the approved items for a child from the gender and age group that you choose. Catagories are Boy or Girl 2-4, 5-9, and 10-14 years old. OCC requests that you include $5.00 in each box to help pay some of the costs of getting the box to the child overseas. You can then mail or ship you box to there warehouse in Boone, North Carolina or if you want to save the shipping costs just call OCC at 1-800-353-5949 and ask where the nearest Collection Center is to you and then take your box or boxes there. You could get a collection of boxes from other people and take them all at the same time.




How to pack a Shoe Box

1. Find an empty shoe box. (Try your local shoe store)

2. You can wrap it --lid separately-- if you would like, but wrapping is not required.

3. Decide whether your gift will be for a Boy or a Girl and their age category: (2-4), (5-9), (10-14). Cut our appropriate label from brochure & tape it on the TOP or your box and mark the correct age category.

4. Fill the box with a variety of gifts using the suggestions below as a guide.

5. Enclose $5 or more to help cover shipping & other costs. Put it inside an envelope & inside the box, clearly visible on top of the gift items. Checks are recommended rather than cash (make it out to Samartian’s Purse).

6. You may enclose a note to the child and a photo of yourself or your family. (If you include your name and address, the child may write you back.)

7. Place a rubber band or two around your box and lid.

8. Take your completed shoe box gift to your nearest collection center or ship it to Samaritan’s Purse. For the location of the nearest collection point call 1-800-353-5949.

Medicines of any kind (vitamins, cough drops, etc.)

Old or used items
Perishables or other food items

"Northern Michigan Collection Site"


Church of the Living God

The collection will be from Monday, November 12th through Monday, November 19th, 2001


The collection site will be open Monday- Saturday from (hours to be announced) each day and from 9:00AM-2:00PM Sunday, November 18th and (hours to be announced) on Monday, November 19th, 2000.



We are setting up shoe box drop off relay collection sites all over Northern Michigan and they will be listed here as they confirm their involvement. The drop off sites may not be open the same days or hours that the Traverse City collection site is open so be sure to call the number listed beside the drop off site to find out where they are collecting the shoe boxes and the days and times that they are open.
