Rules and Regulations
I Hygiene:
- Fingernails and toenails must be kept cut short and clean at all times. Absolutely no jewelry to be worn during class.
- Hair rule for men: Neat, clean and well groomed. Long hair must be tied back. Beards, mustaches, sideburns, etc. may be worn if kept trimmed and neat.
- Personal Hygiene: Always remember the four "C's" of Tae Kwon Do: Clean Body, Clean Mind, Clean Spirit, Clean Heart.
- No student is allowed to chew gum within the training area.
II Respect for the Tae Kwon Do Training Area:
- Before stepping onto the training floor (dojang), you must remove your shoes and bow. If you walk across the floor you must walk to the outer edge of teh training area. Anytime you leave the training area, you will turn towards the training area and once again you must bow before stepping off.
- When in the training area before class, you will do warm-up exercises, pratice your basic fundamentals, or bag work, whil you wait for the class to being.
- No protective gear is to be worn during basics or forms, or training weights during free sparring.
- No excessive talking, laughing, or horse-play will be tolerated within the training area.
- Absolutely no smoking within the training area.
- No drinking of alcoholic beverages or medications within eight hours of your scheduled class session.
- Be very open minded about your training. Practice hard and allow your Instructor to make the necessary corrections without your feeling offended. Also remember, "Repetition is the pathway to perfection."
- To become good in the "art" of Tae Kwon Do, your training sessions must not be interrupted. Try your best not to be absent more than two classes consecutively. "The benefits and objectives of your training equal the effort that has been put into it."
- Fatigue is a weakness when leaning against a wall. It is bad for your spine. Your Instructor may think you are out of shape. Be active. (See VI-C.2.)
III Respect for Others
- Showing respect to others on or off the training floor is part of being a student in Tae Kwon Do. While training, one should show respect at all times including to one's opponents. One should never lose patience or give excuses; they are signs of weakness. Maintain self-control and self-confidence at all times. As a beginner, you will have two enemies: the lack of self-confidence and discouragement; don't let either overcome you.
- Any student who has been training longer than yourself or has a higher rank is a senior to you.
- When bowing, your feet should be together, toes touching; open hands, palms inward at the sides. You should not slap your hands on your legs. As you bow, you should look at the florr, not at the other person. This is a bow of respect. You will be instructed on other ways to bow and when they are appropriate.
- When approaching or approached by your Instructor or a ranking belt, you will come to attention and bow. You must address seniors as "Sir" or "Ma'am".
- When given a direction by your Instructor, you must reply using "Sir" or "Ma'am".
- When corrected by your Instructor you must bow, followed by the reply, "Thank you, Sir/Ma'am".
- When asked a question by your Instructor or senior student, you must always end the answer with "Sir" or "Ma'am".
- Whenever you address other students in the training area, first names are not used. Their last name preceded by Mr., Ms., or Mrs. only, are acceptable.
- If a student has a question that can be answered by a ranking student and/or by the senior student of the class, he should do so, thereby not interrupting the class by going directly to the Instructor. A "chain of command" must be followed at all times.
- Disrespect is shown by folding your arms or placing your hands on your hips. These positions are considered defiant and defensive.
IV Respect for Your Uniform
- White uniforms (with accepted Association patches) are to be worn in all formal classes and at testings once you earn the rank of 8th gup (purple belt). Uniforms are only to be worn at martial arts functions. Please check with your senior student if you have any questions. White represents purity. Historically, white cloth was significantly cheaper than cloth of colors, and therefore quite common.
- Always treat your training uniform (toe'balk) and belt (dee) with respect, they are symbols of your Tae Kwon Do training. The only time your belt should touch the floor is when you are in it.
- While in uniform, a student must only practice techniques related to the training and teaching of Tae Kwon Do, nothing else. A student is considered "out of uniform" when he removes his belt. For example: If a student is asked to sweep the floor, or some other duty not related to Tae Kwon Do, he must first remove his belt before carrying out the request.
- No student is allowed to sit on a chair or bleacher without first removing his belt unless given permission to do so.
- When outside the studio/class, such as at a demonstration or tournament, a student may smake, eat or drink soft drinks only after he has removed his belt. NOTE: It may be draped around the neck until finished.
V Opening Class
- When the Instructor enters the Training Area, any student maycall the group to attention by saying, "Cha ruet." Then the most senior student will call "Kyung yet" (bow).
- If a student wishes to leave class early, permission to do so should be requeted from his Instructor before class begins.
- Injuries that may inhibit training should be mentioned to your Instructor before class.
- Obey all commands with speed - Run. The slow person uses the time of the other students.
- At the command of the Instructor, who shouts, "Jung yul" (line up), the students line up with ranks facing the flags or front of class with the highest ranking student to the far right and the lowest ranking student to the far left. The instructor positions himself in the front and center of the class. The senior student looks to see that all are lines up properly, then shouts, "Cha ruet" (come to attention), followed by a short pause, then the senior student shouts "Kyung yet", bowing to the flags if present. The Instructor does an about face, the senior student again shouts "Kyung yet", at which time the students bow to the Instructor. The Instructor will call for the Student Oath, followed by "Moong Yum" (meditation). At this point the Instructor takes charge of the class calling "Joon be" (ready), all move the left foot to ready position, and training begins.
- Once in position, do not move. Ignore discomfort and irritation, maintain good eye control; discipline always.
- When the President of the WMTKD Association enters any studio or club or during a class session, the Instructor or senior student must immediately call the entire class to attention and give the command to bow. After proper respect has been paid, they will resume their class.
NOTE: If the Instructor and senior student are not aware of the President's appearance, any student may bring the class to attention, but the Instructor will call the command to bow. The same procedure should be followed when a 4th Dan (Master Instructor) enters. It will be left to the discretion of the Instructor if this procedure will be followed when other black belts enter the workout area.
- PROCEDURES WHEN LATE FOR CLASS: After the late student has dressed for class and has bowed into the training area and done 20 push-ups, the student must wait off to the side of the training floor. Once he recognized by the Instructor, he must bow and ask permission to join class.
VI During Class
- When students are in position and the command "Bar roe", (at ease) is given by the Instructor, each student must remain within an imaginary three foot circle until properly dismissed by the Instructor.
- During class, no students are allowed to talk to spectators or leave the training area without permission from the Instructor in charge. Only during the break time are students allowed to leave the training area.
- While seated on the floor, a student should keep proper posture. There are three acceptable postures:
- Hands place on the knees, back straight, legs crossed in front with feet tucked beneath the thighs.
- Feet flat on floor, arms wrapped around knees (leaning back on hands is a sign of fatigue). (See II-I)
- Sitting on the heels with shins resting on the floor and the hands on top of the knees.
- Learn the Korean terms and use them in class.
- During one steps, keep all talking to an absolute minimum. Use the time for repetition of the physical techniques with your partner.
- You are allowed to learn and practice only WMTKDA forms required for your next rank. If a student is of exceptional ability and has the Instructor's permission, he/she may learn other forms (poomsae).
- Do not ask about/show interest in testing. The emphasis is on learning, not on teating and rank. Your progress is being observed, and youwill be told when you are ready. Due to the size of the Organization, it is possible that someone may be overlooked. At this time, contact the Secretary only if there is a problem.
- Always remember - You are a Marial Artist whether in or out of class, and your conduct reflects honor or dishonor to your classmates, Instructors, Studio and Association. Display a positive mental attitude at all times, excuse is a weakness.
VII Closing Class
- The same procedure will be followed that was used to open class with one exception: Senior student calls "Cha ruet, kyung yet," calling the class to attention and bowing to the Instructor. The Instructor calls "Moong Yum" and all meditate, after which he recognizes the senior student, and all students turn to the right. The senior student shouts "Hey Chill" (dismissed). Students immediately answer "Dun'gel" (united as one), as they bow.
- Then class will repeat "C'aam sa omni da," (thank you) to Instructor, and the Instructor will repeat "Chun mon nee-yo" (you're welcome).
NOTE: If you have any concerns or problems in the Association, you should follow chain of command by talking with your Senior Student. If he cannot help you, he will go to the Instructor. If the Instructor does not have the answer he/she is to present the situation/question to the Board of Directors who will in turn if necessary take to the President of WMTKD.
