The Shows! The Costumes! The Life!

I live in the theatre. If I had my way, I would have a bed in the backstage. It would really help. Anyway, I am testing out my abilities in the alphabet of theatre: Acting, Backstage, Costuming and even Directing.

This is the Pigeon Creek Production of William Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream. Pigeon Creek performs in the woods of West Olive, Michigan. We took the appropriate contexualization of the bard's fantastical trip through the woods which takes place in in Ancient Greece. I played the roles of Egeus, father of Hermia, and the artistically challenged, Peter Quince. Togas, Fairies, and Love Affairs. Hmm...

Here's another picture from the same show. This was taken during our venue at Grand Valley State University's Shakespeare Festival. Playing along side my Peter Quince, was Jay Harnish, Grand Valley Alumni, playing Nick Bottom.

Here's an artsy shot of As You Like It, the other Shakespeare show is our Pigeon Creek Shakespeare Company 1999 season. Here is I, ii; where Celia and Rosalind bicker on the meaning of love. You can see me stanging up behind everyone wearing a leather vest and a ukelele, I played Amiens, the bard. Celia (left) was played by Jenison's Allison Shoemaker and Rosalind was by GVSU's Katherine Mayberry (see also Lady Scottish Play below.)

Here's me in Godspell, by Stephen Schwartz. I played Sonya, a transvestite, kinda like a Mary Magdalene character. It was amazing and the play is really interesting. It is the gospel as told by Matthew (hence the name Godspell.) We performed this at Central Park Players in Grand Haven, MI. My home town.

This is the cast and crew from Nunsense, by Dan Goggin. Our Student Technical and Actor's Guild for Entertainment (STAGE) put on the show in Grand Valley State University's Cook Dewitt Center. I designed the costumes for the show and constructed them. Nuns, dancing, singing and getting high, what more do you need? Really?

Grand Valley State University decided to perform Macbeth for our annual Shakespeare Festival. I played Malcolm, prince of Scotland. This picture is of Macbeth and Lady Macbeth (played by the divonic chevaliette Katherine Mayberry.)

Here's another shot, of the great battle scene in Act V, right before the death of Mr. Scottish Play, himself. The set was based on designs by Adolphe Appia, one of my heroes in Theatre Theory History.

And here is a dirty shot of the three "witches" surrounding The Scottish King in his temptation of Royalty. The witches from left to right, are my friends: Becky Svacha, Betsy Loomis and Kate Hanley. All three tempting seductresses, I know, look out, King!!!

The GVSU Opera Theatre, co-funded by the music and theatre departments, produced Stephen Sondheim's Into The Woods. This is the publicity shot, with three of my friends, Jim Lott, Kara Bastos and Wendi Parrott (Jack, Lil' Red and Cinderella.) Overall, the show was very interesting to me because it touched a lot of the theories that I have been learning, like Brecht and Sondheim. This is me backstage with Loretta Swit ("Hot Lips" Houlihan from M*A*S*H.) She played the title role this summer in MAME at Cherry County Playhouse. If you CLICK on the photo you can see some more backstage shots, some as hot as this one. (PG13-Rated:)
