ON TONIGHT SHOW
Well, tonightís the night.
Or, that should be "Tonightísí the night, as in Hulk Hogan and Eric Bischoff
are scheduled to be on the Tonight Show this evening to shoot the big angle
for the Road Wild PPV that will set up that fabulous, much anticipated
six man match with Ed Leslie joining his boys to take on Leno, Kevin Eubanks,
and Dallas Page. Leno did another bit on the show last night to set it
all up. It was very similar to last Fridayís bit, and it ended up with
"Hogan" showing up again (of course it was the same guy from last week).
Jay said Hogan was there on his bike and the guy came out on a tricycle.
Funny from what I was told.
WINS RATINGS AGAIN
Was airing the BatB match on Nitro
this past week a mistake or a success. I think the best answer is Ö both?
Look below at the quarter hours from this past week.
Quarters 1 2 3 4
5 6 7 8 9
WWF 4.4 4.1 4.9
3.6 5.3 4.9 5.3 6.0 6.8
WCW 4.2 4.3 4.2
6.5 5.0 4.9 5.0 4.4
The number that stands out, obviously,
is the 6.5 that the Rodman/Hogan vs.Page/Malone did. That was the second
highest quarter since the wars started. However, itís also easy to see
that was only one of two quarters that WCW won, and that Raw built big
at the end. The Nitro replay did a 1.6 with a huge 10 share! And just to
note, if you take the ratings numbers out to the hundredth decimal point,
Nitro actually won the head-to-head ratings. I canít get THAT deep on it!
In any event, itís obvious that the 6.8 overrun
In more ratings news, USA head Barry
Diller is well aware how well Raw is doing in the ratings and is trying
to find a way to get the US Open (tennis variety) to agree to air their
early round matches from 8/31 to later in the evening so Raw can air in
itís normal slot. For those not looking at the calender, that IS the day
after SummerSlam and Raw stands to do a big rating. I donít count on it
happening though. Just think, when tennis went on at this time last year,
ratings went up for USA. This year, they will probably go down.
SUNDAY NIGHT HEAT TAPINGS
Just a few items out of those tapings:
Shane McMahon is apparently playing "yes man" to his father; in his announcing
debut, Vince builds him up as "the star of the show" and Shane is accompanied
to the broadcast table by a pair of hotties (one of whom was ID'ed by a
reader as Alley Baggett, Playboy model)...... Tiger Ali Singh is
finally gonna be getting on TV with a modified "Million Dollar Man" gimmick;
he got good heel heat by mocking Americans and making audience members
embarrass themselves for money. Also, where DiBiase had Virgil, Singh's
got his servant Abu....... after Bart Gunn shocked the world
by KO'ing Steve Williams, Dan Severn asked out of the Brawl For All tourney;
he got his wish, as the Godfather (who lost to Severn) was re-instated
to the tourney's second round...... the thing with Hawk on Monday night
was NOT built on at Tuesday's tapings, which is kind of too bad; it's funny
on a few different levels, and it could spark a bit more interest in the
LOD. And yes, it is by all accounts an angle, not a real case of Hawk showing
up to work while under the influence. The Parade of Human Oddities
is finally back ...... the Rock and Owen Hart get a shot at Austin
and Undertaker's tag straps next Monday night.... at the live RAW on 8/10,
HHH and X-Pac will battle to determine the #1 Contender to the Rock's IC
GIRLS IN PENTHOUSE
The PENTHOUSE article on the Nitro
Girls hit the newsstands. While very complimentary towards the girls themselves
(who tease in photos, without actual nudity) wrestling is once again given
an autopsy and kayfabe is slaughtered...
"Sex and violence sell," declared a
seven-foot-one, 367-pound long-haired philosopher of the ring by the name
of Kevin Nash as he sat in the basement of Philadelphia's CoreStates Spectrum
a few hours before show time on a recent Monday afternoon. "We have violence.
Now the Nitro Girls add sex."
What triggered Kevin's observation
wasn't a blow to the head by one of the Steiner Brothers, with whom Kevin
was choreographing his upcoming bout -- "At the same time you're clocking
me, take a step toward my brother and grab both his legs," Scott Steiner
instructed -- but the sight of Chae, the Asian Nitro Girl, as she ducked
into her dressing room.
"That Oriental girl is fabulous," Kevin
rumbled under his breath.
"Nice body," agreed Scott Steiner.
The wrestlers went on to discuss the
more intimate details of Chae's flawless anatomy.
"Dancing is as much a part of my life
as chiropracty," she explained charmingly when I inquired why a chiropractor
would want to be eye candy for vocational-school dropouts.
The article also mentions that Eric
Bischoff is hatching plans for the girls to go into some kind of PPV competition
against the girls from HOOTERS, Penthouse Pets, and various football cheerleaders
in what he calls "athletic quasi-sports events".
We've put up a new survey for our
readers to participate in. Feel free to voice your opinions and make your
opinion count. Just click on the link to let it rip:
legit tough-guy Steve Williams knocked out by unheralded Bart Gunn in a
Brawl For All shoot, Dan Severn asked to be pulled from the tournament.
Severn had to be concerned even before Williams went down at Bart's hands,
as he had trouble putting away the Godfather in his own first round match
two weeks back; simply put, the rules don't allow for Severn to display
his strengths. The Godfather has been re-instated to the tourney
in Severn's place.
