Marcella's Tale

The end was nigh
the end was really nigh....

{Cat's note: the photos Marcy mentions next can be viewed at her site: http://marcelladetroit.com/mcmtsdawiz6.html}

In fact, these photos were taken to possibly be used for the sleeve of our last single, "Hello, (Turn Your Radio On), but were never used. I thought they were wonderful and am happy to present them to you.

I left off on the previous page saying that we were going to America to do some dates. We met in Atlanta, Georgia on or near August 19th. We did a gig there for radio. I remember it was in this bar and we went on at about 1:00 A.M., very strange. But it went surprisingly well. We played in New York City at the Irving Plaza (I think that is what it was called) and also appeared on the David Letterman Show, which was fantastic, Austin and Houston, Texas a few dates in Canada, I believe they were Montreal, and Toronto, L.A. and San Francisco, Chicago and the last show was a bizarre radio gig outside of Sacramento, where our bus driver was holding our equipment hostage. He hadn't been paid and wouldn't let our equipment off the bus until he was paid. It was a very strange scene, kind of like a Fellini film. We were all stuck in this little hotel room for a few hours, going stir crazy. The guitarist, Gully, ended up wearing my dress for that night's performance. It looked better on him than it did on me, really.

On our way back to San Francisco after the show, we were all drinking and talking. I remember Siobhan and I hugging and I said to her, "Thanks for showing me what it means to be an artist". I really learned a lot working with Siobhan. I learned what made me unique and to use that, with all my little idiosyncracies, and for that it was all worth it. We laughed, cried, joked; it was a good night. The next morning we were on a plane to New York.

We got to New York, where Dave was meeting up with us along with Shakespear's management. Up until that point we were travelling with the road manager. We all had a drink and started talking about our pending gigs back in England. We were supposed to be playing the Royal Albert Hall which is a wonderful looking building in London, a huge cavernous place, that I was very excited about playing and also a few other dates. I think it holds about 10,000 people or so. For the last week or so we had been talking about the gig and Siobhan did not want to do it. She wanted to cancel the gigs because she said she needed to spend time with her family, and convinced me it was the best thing to do. However, the road manager said that we would be liable to pay cancellation fees that would be quite exorbitant. Siobhan didn't mind. She was very adamant about not doing the gigs. I was asked by her manangement to come to London anyway, in hopes that she would change her mind and do the shows......

So, there I am in London, holed up in a very nice hotel, I might add. I decided to treat myself to a special hotel as I'd been working so hard and felt I deserved it. I was there for six days, before I had an answer from anyone. I kept trying to call Siobhan, and finally she called me. I spoke to her and Dave and they told me they needed to spend time together. One of the last things she ever said to me was, "One day I'd like to come over to your house, have a cup of tea, and be your friend".

Unfortunately, that's not what happened. I would have liked that. I really would have.
