Marcella's Tale
wow it's a huge hit...no. 1 in the U.K. for 8 weeks....
Or, The Beginning of the End
And so it was, a huge hit that is, AND the
beginning of the end. I came over to England
in January to start promotion for "Stay". It
was funny because I was so naive, I had no
idea how much Siobhan really did not want
that record to come out. We were supposed to
do a radio tour, i.e.; go to many radio
stations across England, to promote the
single, to perform it acoustically and I
spoke to Siobhan a few days before it was to
start. She said she wouldn't be coming on
the tour, so I had to do it myself. I just
thought she didn't want to be away from her
family, which is what she implied, so I
happily did it on my own. I went across
England and performed "Stay", acoustically,
by myself for about 4 days. It was very
grueling, but it paid off.
The next thing we know we are getting
tremendous press on the song and doing "Top
of the Pops" which was THE television show to
be on in England if you were going to get a
song to be a hit. I remember we were doing a
rehearsal one day and we were all realizing
that we had a huge hit on our hands. Siobhan
said, "Fasten your seat belts!!". And she
was right. We worked our tails off and
"Stay" was number one for 8 weeks in England,
much to our surprise. It was almost getting
to be embarrasing, friends would call and
say, "are you still number one?" And I would
almost feel like apologizing or something!!
I think we held a record for the longest
number one in the decade, along with Frankie
Goes To Hollywood for "Relax".
Interesting thing about this picture above
{the "Stay" single cover - >^..^<}. We did that
shoot for the possible sleeve of "Stay", with
Jean Baptiste Mondino, an excellent
artist-photographer that we had the honor of
working with along Judy Blame, a fantastic
stylist. For this particular moment, I
believe Siobhan wanted to have a tear in her
eye but the tears weren't coming. I
suggested that she think of an incident that
made her cry before in her life and reminded
her of something that happened to her that
might evoke those feelings. The tears came -
the acting lessons paid off!!
