Introduction

SAMUEL ANNIS was born circa 1705 and, according to Goffstown, New Hampshire records, was from Windham, New Hampshire, but he is also referred to in Massachusetts records as "Samuel Annis of Marblehead" (Massachusetts). He died February 1748 at Boston, Massachusetts; married circa 1726, Avis Hilton at Marblehead, Massachusetts, and had at least three children; married 4th, July 6, 1743, Mary Humble at Boston, Massachusetts, and had two children. He also married two other times, without children. (See below)
It is interesting to note that, although positive identification of Samuel's father is not available, there is much in the way of evidence that would indicate that he was related to both the Andrew Annis, and the Cormac Annis lineages. Samuel had two daughters named Susannah (an uncommon Annis Christian name) that is found only in Andrew's line (his granddaughter, Susannah {1756-1838}. Andrew's son, John, was born at Marblehead, Massachusetts, the same location that Samuel was first married.
It was assumed by Alonzo Lawson Annes, in his unpublished manuscripts, that Samuel was the son of Charles {1693-1741} (Abraham, Cormac) who removed to Wells, Maine circa 1718. Samuel's intention's of marriage to Mary Humble were published at Wells, Maine on March 19, 1743, and it was stated that he was residing at St. George, Maine at that time. Samuel's trade was that of a mariner, and it would not be unreasonable for him to travel to Wellstown. This would also explain his residence at Marblehead and Boston, both major seaports of the early colonial period in Massachusetts.

It should be noted that there is, at time, NO firm, documented evidence of paternal lineage.

According to the Genealogical Dictionary of Maine and New Hampshire page 333
"Samuel Annis of Marbleheard, fisherman, and wife, Avis, quitel. mortgage. of ¼ of all eastern land claims in York or elsewhere of 'our father John Hilton late of Boston, dyer or clothier.' This vague deed is suggestive of fraud. Marblehead and Gloucester were ablaze at that time with the money being made by forged deeds at Muscongus. If Samuel Annis of Marblehead was the son of Samuel Annis of Gloucester, and if the Snellings, Tuckers and Martins of the two towns were related, we must ignore the deed as a swindle. Samuel Annis and wife were hired by Samuel Martin of Muscongus to live there with William Hilton for 7 or 8 yrs. See Colonial Society of Massachusetts, Vols. vi and viii, esp. viii, pp. 111, 114. Fact: Samuel Annis and w. Naomi, she age 60 or 70, were living at St. George's in 1769, and Samuel Annis Jr., coaster, of St. George's, m. at Boston 6 July 1743, Mary Humble of Wells."
His Last Will and Testament was administered on February 7, 1748/1749 at Boston, and according to an account returned by his widow, there were "two small children". The Goffstown, New Hampshire records state that he had a son, Samuel, who died May 29, 1828 in his 83rd year. There may have been other children.

E (New Hampshire), 1st Regiment, United States Sharpshooters in the Civil War. Uncle Alvaro taught him how to shoot and take care of his gun, stressing from his experiences in the field that "the first thing to be done is to feed and water your horse if you have one, then clean, oil and, if necessary, load your rifle, then get your food, wash your dishes and get wood for the next fire. If you absolutely must neglect any of these things, go without your victuals and take care of your horse and rifle first, or you may not need further victuals." Alvaro F. Annis cannot be found on the rolls of this regiment, as he volunteered, was rejected during the physical, then substituted for a man who was drafted. Once he had passed the physical, which he did, and got into the army, his shooting skill was discovered and he got a transfer to the Sharpshooters. The name on the rolls was that of the man he substituted for, which he had to remember to answer to at roll call.
