DESCENDANTS OF RICHARD ANNIS OF HUNTINGDONSHIRE, ENGLAND

Image: Annis Coat

Introduction

It is important that we remember that many Annis families came from England and Scotland during the great emigration periods of the 19th and early 20th centuries. Although most of these lineage’s cannot be linked to the earlier Colonial period Annis families, they must be accounted for in the census of American Annis families so that they may have their own identity, and not mislead family researchers who may believe that they are somehow related to the earlier emigrants. These families successfully carved out their own Annis legacy and it is important to note that they share many of the same attributes.
Many thanks to Alice Forgy, Richard Faught, Phyllis Parker, Bob Prewitt, Judge Frances Annis, and many others for their contributions to the story of Richard's descendants. At a family member’s suggestion, some individuals will be protected by "Private" after their name. No other information about these individuals will be made available.

Brief History of Wistow Parish, Pidley Parish and surrounding area

Wistow is a small, rural village located in a small secluded valley off the Ramsey to St. Ives Road in Cambridgeshire. Wistow is a farming community that has grown up around the central features of its church and manor house. The church is partly Norman and is a Grade 1 Listed Building. In England this means that it is a building of exceptional interest, sometimes considered to be internationally important. The church has some 15th-century painted glass and the manor house dates in part from the early 17th century and so it certainly fits this description.
The surrounding area has a long history that dates back to the early Britons. Wistow, shortened from Wistanstowe (holy place of Wistan) A Christian Prince of Mercia, Saint Wistan, was murdered by his cousin Brifardus in 849 AD. Brifardus coveted the throne, and it is rumored to this day that every year "human hairs grow through the grass in Wistow Churchyard on 1st June", the anniversary of Saint Wistan's murder. The "Anglo-Saxon's" (who displaced the Britons) and their history in this area stretched over 600 years, from 410 to 1066. They were a collection of peoples made up of Frisians, Jutes, Angles and Saxons, but history has grouped them together under the label of Anglo-Saxons.
Huntingdonshire remained part of the Anglo-Saxon kingdom of Mercia until the Danish invasion of the 9th Century. It suffered with the rest of Mercia during the early Viking raids, but to a lesser degree than its northern and eastern neighbors. Wistow was in the area controlled by the Danish Army of Huntingdon 880-917 A.D. Alfred the Great was the King of Wessex at this time. In 917, King Edward the Elder and his sister Aethelflaed, Lady of the Mercians (children of Alfred the Great), fought for recovery of parts of the Danelaw and succeeded after defeating the Danish army decisively at Huntingdon and Wistow. Wistow remained in Anglo Saxon hands until the invasion of the Normans in 1066. But the Danes were a constant threat and by 1011 they had again overrun East Anglia and the shires of Middle England including half of Huntingdon. With the coming of the Normans in 1066, Wistow and Pidley were entered into the Domesday Book, which is a manuscript record of the "Great Survey" of much of England and parts of Wales completed in 1086 by order of King William the Conqueror.

First Generation

RICHARD ANNIS was born in Huntingdonshire (now Cambridgeshire), England, but there is some conflict in the official records as to the year of his birth. In an application for marriage in 1782 his age is stated as "age twenty-one and upwards". His burial records show that he was aged 46 when he was buried on April 29, 1815 which would place his birth date in 1769. It is more likely that he was born no later than circa 1765. His marriage intentions to Elizabeth Thody (1760-1789) were recorded on December 13, 1782 and her name appears on the baptismal records for each of the three children she bore Richard. Elizabeth died February 9, 1789, and was buried at Wistow Parish, Huntingdonshire. Richard married second, May 6, 1806 to Mary Grange at Wistow and they had one child. This was a brief marriage, as Mary (Grange) Annis died July 2, 1809 at Wistow Parish. All of the children of Richard Annis were baptized at Wistow Parish. Richard was buried April 29, 1815 at All Saints Churchyard, Wistow Parish, Huntingdonshire.

Thomas and Charlotte lived at the hamlet of Fenton until circa 1823 before making their home at Pidley. The villages of Pidley and Fenton lie next to one another on the road between Ramsey and Somersham and together form the Parish of Pidley-cum-Fenton. He was a farmer of wheat and potatoes. The medieval parish church of All Saints stood on the site of the present church between at least the 12th century until it was pulled down in 1863. The Victorian replacement was constructed between 1864-5 using much of the original stone for the facing and has a west tower with spire. The only features surviving from the original church are a 14th-century window reset in the vestry, and a circular sundial in the north wall.
