William Annis was born at Windham, NH, the son of Charles and
Sarah (Emerson) Annis. "William was a dispatch and mail carrier from Toronto to Oshawa by horseback and led
an adventuresome life with highway robbers and hostile Indians. He later drove the Royal Mail Coach over the first
corduroy road, which was made from four inch pine planks, (Kings Highway) between the above mentioned cities, and
was known to have never lost a mailbag. William was a public spirited man who risked life and property to give
aid to William Lyon McKenzie during the Canadian rebellion of 1837, and was known as a leader for social reform.
Fanny Conant was the daughter of Roger and Rhoda (Ranall) Conant."

Charles Annis was born at Haverhill, MA, the son of John and Abigail
(Rolfe) Annis. He is the progenitor of most of the Annis family that resided or resides in Canada. There are several
other Annis families that are on record there, but Charle's descendants are the most numereous. For more information

Among the group of devoted, hardy Methodist pioneers who gathered
at Annis’ public house to hear God’s Word were the following families: Richardson, Proctor, Howell, McGinnes, Pilkey,
Fawcett, Thompson and Washington. They were committed enough to undertake the building of our first log and frame
church. The “Annis Annals” and R. Bonis’ “History of Scarborough” reveal that the land was donated by Levi Annis.
The early Annis pioneers had also used an acre of their land south of the church on Scarborough Golf Club Road,
as a burial ground. They also generously donated this land to the congregation and it became the Washington Church
Cemetery.
