Annis Family Virtual Cemetery
Foreign National, Military Cemeteries and War Memorials
It has been said that there is no greater love than that of a man who is willing to sacrifice himself for others. Many Annis men have gone to foreign shores to not only defend their way of life, but to enable others to pursue their lifes in the manner that they wish. In the process of these noble deeds, many have fallen and now lay beneath the soil of those foreign lands. We honor their memory, their sacrifice, with this memorial.

Serjeant, 4857568, 1st Battalion, Leicestershire Regiment, Royal Army |
Historical information: Before 1939 the Kranji area was a military camp, and at the time of the Japanese invasion of Malaya was the site of a large ammunition magazine. On February 8, 1942, the Japanese crossed the Johore Straits in strength, landing at the mouth of the Kranji River within two miles of where the war cemetery now stands. On the evening of February 9th, they launched an attack between the river and the causeway. During the next few days fierce fighting ensued, in many cases hand to hand, until their vastly superior numbers forced a British withdrawal. After the fall of the island the Japanese set up a prisoner of war camp at Kranji, and eventually a hospital was organized. The small cemetery set up at Kranji by the prisoners was the origins of the large war cemetery created by the Army Graves Service after the war ended. |
