Harry Forrest Annas

Harry Forrest Annas, photographer, was born on February 27, 1897, in Washington, IA, the son of Frederic Druff Annas and Viola (McGee) Annas. After World War I service in the Rainbow Division in France, Harry enrolled in the Southern School of Photography at McMinnville, Tennessee. In 1926, shortly after he graduated, he opened a studio in Columbus, Iowa and then he subsequently moved his business to Webster, Iowa.
In search of prosperity during the Great Depression, he and his wife, Marjorie Mae (Iliff), who he married on June 22, 1933, moved to Lockhart, Texas in 1933. Harry's photography achieved national recognition when his photographs were included in Barbara Norfleet's The Champion Pig (1979). Norfleet described his photographs as "the best in the country" and acquired a number of them for the Carpenter Center for the Visual Arts at Harvard University. Annas claimed to specialize in "all kinds of photography"; his work, like that of other small-town studio photographers, filled many needs in the community. He worked at his studio on the south side of the courthouse square in Lockhart until his retirement in 1970. He died on November 19, 1980 leaving a legacy that his grandson and great-grand daughters have continued.
"Shortly before his death in 1980, Harry Annas donated the bulk of the photographic material (over 90,000 negatives and 80,000 prints) to the Caldwell County Historical Society, which in turn donated the archive to the Center for American History in 1985."

Carl Bishop Annis
1870-1957

Carl Annis was born April 1, 1870 at Erie, PA, the only son of James Quincy and Hannah Minerva (Fenton) Annis. As a child, Carl moved with his parents to Cranesville, and Hydestown, PA, Ironton, OH in 1873, and Albert Lea, MN in 1878.
His father became a prominent public figure at Albert Lea and Carl spent the remainder of his childhood in that town. Carl was a house painter by profession and soon after the year 1900 he moved to Rogers, Arkansas as a single man of 30 years. He met Alice Finettie Shenk, a native of Rogers and they married on March 18, 1902 at her father's home. By 1910 they were living in Whiteville, Arkansas where all four of their sons were born.
On April 19, 1929 his wife Alice passed away at the age of 47. Carl soon remarried on November 17th of the same year to the widow Edna Fay (Linton) Baldwin. They made their new home in Esculapia, Arkansas.
Carl was not a professional photographer by trade but we are fortunate to have examples of his work. The photo of Carl and his family was taken by Carl, as well as a portrait of his father. The other photo is one of Carl and Nettie when they were courting and although it is not a superior photograph, it does have a charm of it's own.
Carl died April 10, 1957 at Rogers, Arkansas and is buried at Rogers Cemetery.
