Forrest was at Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, during the Japanese attack. He was stationed aboard the U.S.S. Turkey and fought the Japanese that day. He retired from the U. S. Navy in 1968 as a Senior Chief Petty Officer. A Naval Reserve ensign, who had experienced only six months of sea duty, led the ship's defense at Pearl Harbor until her commanding officer could return to the ship. The crew tumbled to battle stations at the sound of the general quarters alarm and quickly manned the main battery of two 3-inch guns. In addition, two Lewis guns atop the tall pilot house went into action. A number of riflemen armed with Springfield 1903 bolt-action rifles roamed the decks looking for good vantage points from which to fire at the attacking planes. Twenty minutes after the raid began, Turkey backed clear of the next ship to improve her field of fire and continued the fight. When all Japanese planes had departed the area, Turkey and her sister ships labored to salvage the critically damaged battleships which were partially sunk in the mud and oily waters off Ford Island. Turkey remained engaged in these operations until 1 April 1942, when she departed Pearl Harbor for Samoan waters. Died at Garfield, TX and is buried at Haynie Chapel Cemetery, Garfield, TX. David Jesse Annis was born September 4, 1919 at Kaneville, IL, the son of Jesse Hayes Annis and Hattie Phillips. He was raised and grew to manhood in an area that his great great grand parents had pioneered and settled in the 1840’s. He was well known in his home area as a character, but also as a man with integrity and the old pioneering spirit of his forefathers. An article that appeared in the local newspaper after his death describes the life and times of "Bead" Annis. Bead was very proud of his World war II service, and put on his uniform – which still fit him to a “T” – every Memorial Day. He was an army medical corpsman from Casablanca to Anzio north to Rome and up into northern Italy, and was buried in his uniform. Buried at Kaneville, IL. The 6th Defense Battalion was commissioned on 1 March 1941 in San Diego, California. After formation and initial training the battalion departed San Diego on board the USS Wharton (AP-7) arriving at Pearl Harbor on 22 July 1941. The battalion's main body departed Hawaii on 7 September arriving at Midway Atoll on 11 September. The 6th Defense Battalion relieved the 3rd Defense Battalion on Midway and continued defensive preparations. At 0555 on the morning of 4 June 1942, 6th Defense Battalion's SCR-270 early warning radar picked up a large force of Japanese aircraft approximately ninety miles out and approaching from 320 degrees. Thirty-six Japanese bombers eventually made it to Midway in two waves and were engaged by the guns of the reinforced 6th Defense Battalion. Japanese after action reports detail losing three aircraft to antiaircraft fire that morning. Lineage: Frank D., Alfred A., David, Jesse, Solomon, Daniel, Daniel, Abraham, Cormac |
