Whatever Tomorrow Brings is a wonderful book. It begins in Hawaii in 1871 and is set around a missionary family that have been in Hawaii for 15 years. The two youngest members of the family - Sean (14) and Marcail (9), have never been to mainland America and Kaitlin was only 5 years old when they came to the islands. As a surprise for Kaitlins 20th Birthday her parents announce that they are all leaving for mainland America in a month.
This story follows the life of the three children as their lives are turned inside out. Theresa Donovan, their mother, is not well and it is her illness that is the main reason they are travelling to America. However, Theresa and Patrick do not tell their children of Theresa's illness until they reach America and find out that she is only weeks to live as she has Tuberculosis. So, within only a few weeks Theresa has died and the children and Patrick must try and survive without her. Patrick however, decides that he should return to Hawaii to pack up their things and bring them back to America. The children decide to stay with their Aunt until he returns. However, due to a number of circumstances, this situation does not last and the three children must go into the world alone and find their own life.
Can Kaitlin be a mother and a father for her younger siblings while they wait for their father? What happens when they end up in a strange town where they know no one? Will Kaitlin get the teaching position offered or will she have to find work elsewhere? Will she be able to provide for Sean and Marcail? What happens when Kaitlin is struggling with the growing attraction for a man who befriends her family? This story deals well with the issue of trusting God to show you what you should do in specific situations. Kaitlin clings to God and eventually she can see God's will her in the situations around her.
I thoroughly recommend this novel. It is simple enough for teenagers, but spiritually challenging enough for adults. I have read this novel over ten times from start to finish and I'm not sick of it yet nor do I cease to be challenged ever further each time I read it. ENJOY!!
