REVIEW
by Miriam Bartlett

As Time Goes By is one of my favourite books. It follows the life of Jeffrey Taylor who was introduced in Whatever Tomorrow Brings and Bobbie Bradford. Five years before this book begins, there was a church picnic. The pastor of the church decided to invite the older youth to come early to the picnic and have some extra fun. However, the young pastor decided to get the six boys to each pick one of the six girls and invite them. The problem was that Jeff and Richard both wanted to invite Sylvia and no-one wanted to ask Bobbie. So the six guys hid in the Taylor barn and drew straws for Bobbie. It was Jeff who got the short straw. He liked Bobbie, but he really wanted to invite Sylvia, and he wondered if Sylvia would get the wrong idea if he arrived with Bobbie, but he had no choice.

When the time for the picnic arrived Jeff still wished he had been able to ask Sylvia, until Bobbie finally got him talking. Then Jeff began to relax with Bobbie and he began to enjoy her company. Then a horrible thing occurred, Richard and Sylvia walked over and asked Jeff, "How's the short straw?". It didn't take the perceptive Bobbie long to understand the meaning and as she looked around at the others, she realised that they all knew. Jeff took her home immediately, left her and then went home himself. After many tears and scoldings Jeff was worn out. He considered going and apologising to Bobbie that night, but his father assured him that one night wouldn't make any difference and so he should go in the morning. However, when Jeff went to the Bradford house the next morning Bobbie had already left on the morning stage to stay with her aunt for the remainder of the summer holidays.

It is now five years later and Bobbie is finally coming home to stay. Jeff is shocked by the news and is determined to fully apologise and to try and make up to her for the hurt he knows that he caused. When she arrives he is surprised to find that she has changed greatly over the past five years and she is great fun to be around. However, he is scared that he will hurt her again and so he is at a loss to know how to treat her.

Jeff must also deal with the problems he is having with his girlfriend, Sylvia. Jeff had wanted to be special to Sylvia for many years and now he had been going out with her for a long time, but it wasn't as fantastic as he assumed it should be. Sylvia was a friend, and he didn't want to marry her, at least he didn't think he did. This book deals well with the issues that must be faced in a relationship that has continued for many years, but is going nowhere.

This book also deals with the true meaning of being a Christian and why good works will not get you into Heaven on their own. It also deals with trusting God top show you who you should and shouldn't marry. I whole heartedly recommend this book to you as one of Lori Wick's best. ENJOY!
