REVIEW
by Miriam Bartlett
This book follows the life of Ingram, a Knight who was introduced in
The
Troubadours Quest. Ingram was left at the gates of Southwick
Castle in southern England as a baby. Now, at 26 Ingram is visited by a
monk from Ireland who claims to know his family history. This monk was
the one who left Ingram at the castle all those years ago. The monk agrees
to tell Ingram his history IF he travels with him to Ireland.
In reality, the monk however does not know the names of either Ingram’s
mother or father. Ingram’s mother was a nun who was raped and then
rescued by this monk. The monk looked after Ingram’s mother in a remote
cabin until Ingram was born. Unfortunately, Ingram’s mother died in
childbirth. The monk is reticent to tell Ingram about how he was conceived
because Lady Wynne, the lady who raised Ingram, requested that the monk
kept Ingram’s conception a secret. While the monk is still trying to
decide what he can tell Ingram about his parents, he is killed on an
Irish road before the monk can even tell Ingram the place where he was born.
So begins a long journey for Ingram as he searches for his history.
This novel raises many issues especially in respect to adoptees
searching for their birth parents and the consequences of this.
Adopted children will never know what they will find when they search and
this is thoroughly explored in Ingram of the Irish.
I found this book a little tedious in parts as the story sometimes
tended to move quite slowly. I found it most frustrating that when Ingram
found his ‘parents’ and ‘family’ I knew that they were not his family.
I do however acknowledge that due to his history the point is that it
would be nearly impossible for him to find his real family as he knew
nothing of them and what he though he knew was incorrect. I do however
recommend this book to you and I hope that you enjoy it.
