REVIEW
by Miriam Bartlett

This excellent book is based on the story of Joseph, following him when he
is thrown down the well until the start of the famine in Egypt many years
later. Joseph’s story in the Bible during this time is found in Genesis 37,
39 - 41. Angela Elwell Hunt has expanded the biblical story to make
‘Dreamers’.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book mainly due to the insight
it helped me gain into Egyptian life, including worship of idols. Idol
worship was a huge problem in most communities that are discussed in the
Bible and since reading Dreamers I have been able to more fully
understand how this idol worship permeates communities and why the prophets
preached against it.
Although Joseph is the main character in Dreamers there is also a
major female character called Tuya. Tuya is a companion to Pharoah’s niece
at the start of Dreamers and yet she dreams of being much more than
a servant. Within a short time her dreams are shattered when she is sold
to Potiphar as a common slave. It is in Potiphar’s house that Tuya and
Joseph meet and they dream together of one day being free and not serving
others. It is through their friendship that Tuya comes to realise that
there is something different about Joseph and she begins questioning his
beliefs in God and then comes to realise that God is supreme and that idol
worship is evil.
This book is amazingly unpredictable, which is incredible when it is based
on a Bible story. It was this unpredictable story line that caused me to
love this book. It is filled with suspense at nearly every turn and it
lead me to turn to my Bible every time I put Dreamers down to try
and work out what would happen at the next turn. Few Christian novels have
really made me put them down to go and read the Bible.
Please take the time to read this novel and immerse yourself in the life of
the dreamer, Joseph.
