THE TEST MATCH AND THE EVENTS LEADING UP TO THE TEST THAT ADAM GILCRHIST WAS THE CAPTAIN OF THE AUSTRALIAN TEST FOR

All articles are thanks to Baggygreen.com.au

It all started when Steve Waugh injured his left buttock during the Second Test in Perth. Gilchrist, being the vice-captain, was the obvious choice as the replacement captain. Though some people had their doubts, saying that a wicket-keeper could not captain a Test team as he would have too much on his mind. But Gilchrist backed himself for the job.

'Keepers as able as anyone to captain Test team: Gilchrist
Denis Peters - 6 December 2000

CANBERRA - The demands of wicketkeeping should not preclude glovemen from being considered as Test cricket captains, Australian vice-captain Adam Gilchrist said today.

The outstanding wicketkeeper/batsman is to captain the Prime Minister's XI against the touring West Indies at Manuka Oval tomorrow, although he will not don the gloves for the game.

However, as the man most likely to take over from the injured Steve Waugh as stand-in Australian captain for the Adelaide Test starting on December 15, he said the busy task ahead of him was one a wicketkeeper could handle.

"I'm sure it's possible," he said.

"It's a big task for anyone to captain the Test team. It's a terrific job and there's a terrific amount of responsibility to go with it.

"Keepers traditionally haven't been tried. I'd like to think that whether you're a `keeper or a bowler or batsman or an all-rounder, you're never going to be pigeon-holed because of past traditions.

"I just think that if people think you're the right man for the job, give you a go and see what happens."

He did not see this match as a trial for captaincy of the third Test team.

"I've been asked to captain the team in this one-off game so I'll go out and enjoy it, gain a bit from the experience," he said.

"This was selected long before Steve Waugh was injured.

"I'm looking forward to it as a great opportunity to learn about captaincy and have a bit of fun."

Gilchrist, who will captain a side largely untried on the international scene, said his players were in form.

"We've got a form side - a lot of wickets amongst the bowlers and runs amongst the batsmen.

"For Australian cricket's sake we'll be trying to win to make sure we keep them down and us up."

PM's XI coach Geoff Marsh said the team had been selected to reward those players who were putting performances on the board in state-level cricket.

"It's an opportunity for some of the boys to perform in front of the selectors and put their name in the hat," the former Australian coach told AAP.

"It's a pretty hard Test team to get into at the moment and all these matches are opportunities for these boys to show themselves."

Marsh said he believed Brian Lara and other out-of-sorts Windies batsmen needed as much time in the middle as possible but had no idea of who would play.

The West Indies players did not have an official practice session today, having arrived in the early morning after the long overnight flight from Perth.

A team is not expected to be named until shortly before the match at Manuka Oval which has just undergone a $10 million revamp.

Prime Minister John Howard is to officially open the new Sir Donald Bradman Stand at the ground during the lunch adjournment.

PM's XI: Adam Gilchrist (capt), Sean Clingeleffer (Tas), Anthony McQuire (ACT), Mark Higgs (NSW), Brad Hodge (Vic), Mathew Inness (Vic), Martin Love (Qld), Jimmy Maher (Qld), Daniel Marsh (SA), Don Nash (NSW), Brett Swain (SA), Cade Brown (ACT) (12th man).

After days of speculation, the ACB confirmed that Gilchrist would be the 41st Test captain and only the 2nd wicket-keeper to captain the Australian Test team…

Gilchrist named Test captain for Third Ansett Australia Test
Australian Cricket Board - 12 December 2000

Adam Gilchrist has been named as Australia's 41st Test match captain, and will lead the side in the Third Ansett Australia Test match in Adelaide starting on Friday 15 December, 2000.

Ricky Ponting has also been named as vice-captain of the match.

Gilchrist takes over from Stephen Waugh who damaged his left buttock muscle during the Second Ansett Australia Test match in Perth.

The announcement was made by ACB Chairman Dennis Rogers in a media conference at Melbourne Airport on Tuesday morning.

Adam Gilchrist and Ricky Ponting share a joke after an ACB Press Conference in which Gilchrist was announced as Australian captain and Ponting vice-captain, held at Melbourne Airport , Melbourne.

Damien Martyn and Adam Gilchrist celebrate after guiding Australia to a five-wicket win against the West Indies in Adelaide. Australia retain the Frank Worrell Trophy with a 3-0 lead in the five-match series.

Sheer delight! Gilchrist keeps the Australian record-breaking winning run continuing, making it 13 wins on the trot. As well as that, the Test meant Australia retained the Sir Frank Worrell Trophy. Again, Adam shock off the cricits and his doubters, and grabbed the opportunity to help Australia win the Sir Frank Worrell Trophy with two hands. Well done, Adam!

Australians make it a lucky thirteen
Lawrie Colliver - 19 December 2000

Normally the number thirteen is associated with bad luck in the Australian cricket vernacular, but today it took a new meaning as, after thirty-eight minutes of play, Australia wrapped up the Sir Frank Worrell series with a five wicket win here in Adelaide.

Despite the loss of Justin Langer (48) following twenty minutes of play, Damien Martyn (34*) and Adam Gilchrist (10*) steered the ship home on another bright, sunny day.

To start proceedings on the fifth and final day, West Indies captain Jimmy Adams again put his faith in Mervyn Dillon (3/42), giving him the opening over of the day. He tested Martyn out and, from the fourth ball, got one to rise from a length, forcing the West Australian to parry the ball to backward square leg on the bounce. Dillon's excellent maiden acted as a great start the day and then it was the turn of the veteran Courtney Walsh (2/39) to run in from the other end.

Langer went to work immediately, cover driving his first ball for the day for three and, two balls later, Martyn squirted a couple quite safely through the gap between slip and gully. Five from the over and suddenly Australia needed just twenty-seven.

Dillon continued on from the Northern End and gave both batsmen a difficult time. He found Martyn's gloves with a ball which rose sharply from a length - the result a single - and then Langer found two runs backward of square leg with a neat work off the hip.

Walsh sauntered in again to just one slip and a gully, which was quite a remarkable sight in the circumstances, and again the gloves of the batsman were in for a beating as Langer was struck by another ball which rose from a length. Langer's sense of theatre and humour came through as he was shown to be grinning on television coverage straight after the incident.

In the next over, Martyn played a lovely push-drive through the vacant mid off area for three and then, with the score on 111, Langer edged Dillon to Ridley Jacobs to end a partnership of sixty-three. Langer had batted well for his 48 and he left with only nineteen runs still needed.

Gilchrist received a great ovation from the crowd of close to five thousand that made the effort to turn up this morning and he responded appropriately, immediately gliding a ball to third man to open his account. Martyn then square drove a three to reduce the margin to fifteen. To the huge relief of the many present, Gilchrist pulled a four, then off drove for an all run four. Seven were now needed and you could hear the relief eminating from Steve Waugh's lounge room!

Walsh bowled a tremendous over to Martyn following that, beating him once as he cut and then for a second time when he played with a straight bat.

After a couple of singles, two shots off the pads that went for two from Martyn tied the scores. Then a short ball from Walsh was slapped over point to the boundary to ensure the retention of the Sir Frank Worrell Trophy. Due to recent law changes, the boundary actually only proved to be worth a single officially as any runs which are completed before a winning hit now override the actual four. Strange but true, yet largely insignificant in the broader context of a thirteenth consecutive Australian Test win.

Gilchrist hails proudest moment of career
Lawrie Colliver - 19 December 2000

Stand-in Australian captain Adam Gilchrist is a proud man this afternoon after leading his team to a hard-fought five wicket win in the Third Test against West Indies.

Gilchrist was absolutely thrilled with the victory - which gave the Australians a thirteenth Test triumph in succession - and described the series-clinching win in Adelaide as "the proudest moment of my career". Of the events which led up to the home team's success on the fifth and final morning of the match, he said that they made for "the hardest Test I have played in my career".

A visibly delighted Gilchrist also spoke in glowing terms about the never-say-die attitude of a team whose leadership he had assumed for this match in the absence of the injured Steve Waugh.

"The belief was there in the team and it is one of our greatest strengths."

When asked whether there was any tension when he went out to bat with just nineteen runs needed, Gilchirst attested that "it was the most nervous I have been in my career. I just said to myself to try and keep calm and play every ball as I saw it."

The overall experience for Gilchrist over the last five days has been special to him.

"I was extra nervous being captain; it's been a huge honour and a big thrill."

"I learnt so much, it totally opens up your mind," he said, adding that it had been a tremendous experience.

Asked whether he would feel comfortable about the prospect of filling the captaincy role for a longer period, Gilchrist said that he would never knock it back but argued that "one game won't give a decisive conclusion either way; you can't rule it out or confirm you can do it."

Virtually immediately after the game, Gilchrist spoke to Waugh but revealed that "he was exhausted in the gym; he was in a thirty second break between bike sprints!"

Gilchrist's opposite number, West Indian captain Jimmy Adams, took some solace in his team's performance and was pleased with the general improvement that it had made to its game after heavy defeats in Brisbane and Perth.

"We mucked it up in the second session of yesterday," he said, lamenting the fact that another forty or fifty runs against his side's name would have made the Australian victory target very interesting.

"We thought (a score of) 230 or 260 (could help win it for us)," Adams said ruefully after the match. A target of only 130 to defend, he said, was "a big ask for the bowlers".

When quizzed on the quality of the Adelaide Oval pitch, Adams stated that it was a fair surface over the opening three days of the match.

"It played better than it looked. I thought it would have played worse than it did," he said.

On Man-of-the-Match Colin Miller, Adams praised the off-spinner, saying he "is a very good international cricketer" and that all international players like Miller bring something to the game.
