A place to share your creations using the Amigurumi Cavy Pattern from The Guinea Pig Stuff Store. The pattern makes adorable miniature baby guinea pigs (size is 3-4", depending on how tightly you crochet).
Baby guinea pigs are all head and all feet, just like this pattern! With their little floppy ears, you will declare them too cute!
The pattern is quick to complete, and includes tips and ideas. Including the best stuffing to use, ever, for a firm and sturdy figure! Polyester fiberfill just does not do the trick. This stuffing idea is easy to use and readily available.
Minnie
Guinea pig information: This is a piggy given to a friend. She's not based on any specific guinea pig. This is the first one I made, while developing the pattern. I used yarn colors available in my home; that's why she has bright neon ears! Multiple colors tip: The bottom half of her body is brown (which is hard to see from the angle in the photos). Switching colors when crocheting is easy--just hide the knots inside the piece.
Nina
Guinea pig information: This guinea pig was originally going to be named Violet, after my first guinea pig. But the look wasn't right since the original Violet had a ridge all along her back. Given away as a gift. (The amigurumi guinea pig is the one on the left! ;))
Ear tip: I couldn't find a pink shade of cotton yarn light enough for delicate guinea pig ears. However, there was variegated baby yarn with a pastel pink in it. Perfect shade! I separated the skein into four balls of colors (white, pastel blue, pastel green, pastel pink). There was more than enough pink for Nina's ears and even more piggies' ears.
My Fern
Guinea pig information: Made in honor of a family member's late piggy. Fern was an adorable little guinea pig, with irregular-Dutch-type agouti markings. This was made as a gift . . . but I couldn't bear to give it away! The facial features also looked too much like a Dutch guinea pig's, without the irregularity of the original Fern's.
Agouti tip:
To make the agouti style guinea pig, I took white yarn and black yarn. Each yarn had four strands, so I pulled apart two strands and wrapped two white and two black strands together for the agouti sections. Of course, you can find tweed yarn at the craft store and skip this step! But this works for custom colors that may be difficult to find.
Dutch markings: Switching colors for the head has to be done very regularly. However, knots can be hidden inside the work. Making Fern was a lot of extra work (especially in preparing the yarn), but the real one was a special guinea pig and deserved to have a little piggy made in her likeness! Or, two!
Mom's Fern
Guinea pig information: This is the second Fern, made to look a little more like the late Fern. The eyes are placed at a large distance apart to more resemble a guinea pig's. This also shows how each creation turns out totally unique--compare this to the photo above! Markings tip: After completing the piggy, I went over some of the white crochet stitches with halved black yarn, in order to add more irregular agouti markings.
Nose::The nose is an X, to resemble the cute little mouths/noses on piggies. (The color used is pale pink and doesn't show up well in a photo.)
Bows: I threaded ribbon through a large-eye needle and added a ribbon above each ear.
Show off your cavy to the world! Please send photos of your creations and ideas, using this pattern. Include your name as you would like for it to be credited. The photos don't have to be a blank background. How about photos of your cavy traveling the world with you? (However, no brand name items can be pictured.) Thanks for sharing!
