Dear Friends,

We need immediate help from everywhere in the U.S. & outside the U.S. to vigorously oppose a legislative amendment that passed the California Assembly (May 15, 2002) and is now with the California Senate Judiciary Committee.

The bill will make it easy to obtain "proxy consent" so that almost any relative can enter another relative who does not have the capacity to consent into medical experiments or clinical trials that do not promise benefit and may lead to adverse outcomes.

This bill would overturn the fundamental principle of the Nuremberg Code, requiring the consent of the individual. This bill would also overturn the current California Medical Experimentation Act that now adequately protects the interests of the person.
Since the researchers have considerable organizational support, we need grassroots organizations to oppose the amendment with the name of the organization opposing the amendment. The researchers have been conducting such research without legally valid informed consents and now they are working to change the law to make it easy to obtain research subjects.
(Following the death of Abby McIntyre we previously had a successful campaign stopping medical experiments on clients at Metropolitan State Hospital in Los Angeles County.)
Please write a short opposition in the space provided at our Website.

Feel free to forward this e-mail to friends who might want to write a short opposition to this legislation.
Thanks for your help.
