A mural from the Casa dei Vetti depicting a mythological event, possibly Dirce being dragged to her death by a bull set on her by the sons of Antiope.

View of the Palestra (gymnasium) from the amphitheatre with the sun shining through the trees.

In this shot of the Amphitheatre it is possible to see the vast outline of Vesuvius on the left.

It was the infamous eruption of Vesuvius in 79 AD that devestated Pompei and its less well-known neighbour of Ercolano.

Pompei is at once both a beautiful and a tragic place; a magical template of life in Roman times, and a testament to the human cost of the disaster that befell it.
