The Chimo Project - Research Results

Overview of the Chimo Project
A review of the literature on Animal-Assisted Therapy indicates a distinct lack of reliable experimental studies examining the effectiveness of Animal-Assisted Therapy with clients in therapy. In general, research to date is comprised of qualitative case studies or anecdotal accounts. The current project was designed to address that deficiency.
♦ Forty-five clients with mental health problems and 8 therapists participated in the study. Information was available from 36 clients (9 clients were deleted from the study because they attended two or fewer sessions or because they failed to complete the questionnaires). Thus, data from 36 clients were available for analyses.
♦ Clients were diagnosed with depression, anxiety, or both depression and anxiety.
♦ Of the 36 clients participating in the study, 26 clients were from private practice and 10 were from a residential group home. The average age for the private practice clients was 37 years, and 14 years for residential care.
♦ For the Private Practice setting, 15 received Animal-Assisted Therapy in conjunction with traditional therapy (e.g., cognitive behavioral therapy, psychotherapy), and 11 received traditional therapy.
♦ For the Residential Care setting, 7 received Animal-Assisted Therapy in conjunction with traditional therapy (e.g., cognitive behavioral therapy, psychotherapy), and 3 received traditional therapy.
