I seem to be considered a freeware guru now. I originally started my book:
Free Stuff: Making your Dream Movie for Practically Nothing
to help all the people I saw on Videomaker.com who were trying to decide whether to buy good software they couldn't afford or bad software they could. The book originally covered video freeware, but now includes freeware for all types of multimedia work. There are also a few programs which are actually shareware or demos for pro software.
There are 18 chapters up so far, reviewing Windows Movie Maker, Avid Free DV, Pinnacle VideoSpin, Jahshaka, Audacity, Reaper, Sony ACID Xpress, Anim8or, Blender, Microsoft Photo Editor, GIMP, Inkscape, Scribus, media-convert.com, Riva FLV Encoder, VirtualDub, Avidemux and Celtx.
A bunch of chapters are coming soon, including Serif PhotoPlus 6, Maya PLE, WAX, and an appendix containing websites of free stuff.
I've also been invited by The DV Show to host the little 5 minute freeware segment currently called The Download Vault. More info on that soon.
