The myth of mermaids arose during the Middle Ages when sailors saw seals, walruses, and manatees and believed they were mermaids from a distance.  Over the past centuries, the myth of mermaids has arisen and has been depicted by different people from various cultures with each portraying mermaids as either an evil or a good being.  As centuries passed, mermaids have had both a positive and a negative impact on society. Whereas they are trying to help others in some culture, at other times, they are illustrated as beings that are attempting to seduce men to drown them into the sea.
