Mean Girls meets Pretty Little Liars meets Cruel Intentions meets Cry Wolf.

"No one ever says what they're really thinking or tells anyone what they really know, and that makes solving the mystery of dead high school student Brittany Parker difficult for Cassie Mullen. Winterwood Academy is full of secrets and lies and Cassie's quickly learning that you can either join in, or pay the price."

No one immediately presents the truth about who they really are. The lonely looking teenage boy wearing a Metallica hoodie and sporting a spider web tattoo on his neck might walk into a convenient store and feel the clerk's eyes on him the entire time because that clerk considers him a probable thief. Maybe though, what he's really after is a bag of cat food to feed the strays in the woods that hang out near his house. His next stop might be a Vet office, and the front desk woman might be surprised that he didn't walk in with a giant snake across his shoulders. Instead he asks for formula to feed some tiny kittens that are living under his porch that appear to have been abandoned by their mother. He might run into the grocery store as his last errand to pick up flowers for his girlfriend, and without thinking the checkout boy might automatically ask him if he wanted a pack of cigarettes.

The next customer that enters that same convenient store might be a well-groomed middle aged man in a crisp business suit. The clerk might immediately return their eyes to the TV that was on in the background and the so-called businessman would take that opportunity to slip a few slim-jims into his jacket and grab a Monster drink, holding it in his hand and walking right out the doors, confident that the clerk won't notice or think anything of it. That same businessman might return to his car and pull out his i-phone, checking the balance of an account to make sure it had grown significantly in the last half hour as a result of a money transfer he'd requested as soon as he'd successfully stolen another identity.

Maybe if someone had bothered to look under the surface of the people in Brittany Parker's life when she'd first gone missing, she would have been found instead of just her rotting corpse. Maybe if Winterwood Academy wasn't so desperate for money one of the wealthiest families in Boston wouldn't be forced to hide a secret that would change all of their lives forever. Maybe if certain teenage girls weren't so obsessed with popularity and dating social status, certain adults wouldn't rob their minds of the little amount of innocence they had left. But Winterwood Academy had one fatal flaw; no one there ever thought to look beyond the surface until it was far too late.
