The chess board size depends on the size of the pieces. Each square measures 50-65mm. The squares normally measure 1.23 to 1.5 times the king’s base size. Today, chess boards are being labeled by the letters A to H from left to right from the white player’s point of view. Rows, also called as ranks are labeled 1 to 8, and the closest number to the white player is 1. The labels are referred to as algebraic chess notation.

The Movements of Chess Pieces

Chess pieces or “chessmen” are the pieces that players play use in this game. Pawns are considered as the lowest ranked pieces. Pawns are allowed to move only one space forward, or two spaces when you are making its first move. A pawn can capture an enemy piece, which is placed diagonally ahead of it. The knight is allowed to move 2x3 squares wherever it is placed. It is the only piece in the game where it can jump over the other pieces. The bishop is restricted to move to any space that is vacant diagonally. The rook can move vertically or horizontally to any number of squares. Whether diagonal, vertical, or horizontal, the queen can move in such directions, but not the way how the knight moves. The king which is the center of the game, can move to any direction but only limited to one square. The game will ended when the other player’s king is captured by its opponent.

Collecting Chess Sets

Many people prefer to display their chess sets rather than to use them in games. As it is, these chess sets are typically the type wherein the design and materials used are simply outstanding. For a wooden chess set, rosewood, sandalwood and ebony are the best materials to use. Since these are exotic woods, it will take them a full century to reach maturity. In fact, these exotic woods are banned by a lot of countries to be exported. This is the reason why the best crafters of these chess sets would usually stack a supply of woods they are going to need in advance. Therefore, it is safe to say that an investment in a chess set made from fine woods is a great choice.
